Yes you probably do have the right part and they can be an arse to get on. I have found the best way is to get it over the alternator and crank pulleys first and lever it some of the way onto the water pump- enough that it is fairly tight. I use an old tyre lever which is flat and has a lip that see...

We used to have an Opel Kadett hatchback - one of the pre GM ones from 1974 IIRC - my wife moved to England in it from Germany many moons back. It was BRIGHT green with orange wings on both sides where she had an argument with some ice.
