The best way to go????

Post by cam740 » 21 Jun 2005 11:49 am

This has been inspired by a conversation on turbobricks b/w James and i (sorry for the threadjack Foggy!! ) about putting a B23 into my 360.

i havent got the car yet but want to start thinking about whats needed asap.

The 360 is an 85 model B200 GLT (as they all are in Oz!) with 202km on the clock and 1 family owned ot since new. It has a few dints and dings on it but is overall in pretty good nick!!

What I wanna know is - value for performance gains - whats the best way to get more grunt outta it??

I've got a 2.3 (unsure which year/version) lined up that i gotta strip outta the 240 thats in it and would LOVE to get one of those in there with a lil head work (531) and a hot cam (k if possible) but am open to suggestion of other paths to walk!!

I plan on using it as a "fun" car - so would be driven to work a couple of times a week but will hopefully also see some track time as well!!

PS u guys have the BEST range of smilies!!! :360:

Well, you can't get around it, turbo charging is cheapest way per one horsepower gained.

Put that K-Cam and 531 head in and add proper turbo charger and intercooler, new injectors and programmable ecu, then we are near 300hp, maybe more, but be careful if using B23 as block may give at higher boost, I would say that 1bar of boost is still ok.

Then get ready to replace differential and other parts frequently, with loads of power you can and will broke everything at some point ;)

Some guys are using pistons from B23ET, those parts that connect pistons to cranksaft are usually H-profile ones from sweden (my head, forgotting words) they then put those to B230 block. Oh yes and Volvo Penta marine crankshaft, makes engine bigger. Of course if you are not trying to get 500hp out from engine, then none of these is needed ;)

In here Finland it costs around 2000-3000 euros to build that kind of 300hp B23/b230, that price includes also engine, lot of end price depends from what repairs/rebuilds are needed first, don't know how it is in other countries.

Anyway you will need oil sump and oil pump pickup from 360, other parts fits rather well from 200 serie.

Turbo downpipe needs little modification.

Next winter I do have turbo installation planned, if that car of mine passes MOT, there is now some serious new problems, let's see how it goes.

build a b23at enigine with two modified Dellorto 45 DHLA(for turbocharging) and pistones from a b23et engine. modified Intercooler. Take original turbo from a 740 or 940 or trim60. and boost 1bar.

As you have the engine, the b23 would be a good start with the mods you suggest and not too complicated, but getting much more than 150/160 bhp out of it will get very expensive. the turbo route is initialy more expensive, but you will start with 150 + bhp and tuning turbo engines you get big big gains for your money. It realy all depends on what you ultimately want from the car :D

i'd heard that with some decent head work, air intake mods an exhaust and cams that around 200hp would be fairly reliably avail outta a B23E so I guess the idea atm is too get the 2.3 in there and work it up over time!!

Failling that i know where Smithy works (my 360 is there ATM!) so i might go and nick his car!!! :P
