Mechanical/Electronic differences on early (1984) 340s?

Post by Stavros » 17 Oct 2006 02:35 pm

As per title, compared to late 90s 1.4s?

Are there any?

Its just the early ones seem to pre-date modern shape renualt 5s, so im wondering if it was the same stuff with regards to the engine electronics.

And transmission?

There is a change, but I'm afriad I can't offer any advice as to when it was. Gearboxes changed from M45 to M47 (can tell that by looking at the gear knob) and engines went through from B14.1 to B14.4. As I said, not sure of the dates.

Ignition maps changed as well, but so many have had renix swaps by people thinking all renix's are the same you most likely won't get the right one in the car anyway.

From the 1984 yr.model (approx Oct 83) all 340s and 360 carb. versions.had the Renix system with bellhousing sensor. (apart from ignition map changes they were all the same, both B14, B172K and B19A).
360 Injection cars used a Bosch JHFU4 'hall effect' distributor on B19E engines but changed to the Renix system with the introduction of the B200 units (1985 year models).

Prior to 1984, B14 cars (340) had 'breaker point' systems from, mainly, Ducellier (but with a few from AC Delco and SEV Marchal). B19 cars (360) had the Bosch JFU4 system with 'points'.

There may well be differences (although as you say, 84 ought to be Renix). Having said that, if you can be bothered, (as far as I'm aware) the chassis' are all the same, so you can chop and change as you like. I will be effectively turning a 'mk1' -1981 340 B14 into a late 360 with a B200 once I get space for my new project.

cheers
