Whining prop and strange knocking....drift damage?

Post by Sam340 » 04 Dec 2006 01:42 pm

After my drift day yesterday I have noticed that my prop ( i think ) is whining as the car is idling and as I rev it the whine gets louder.... any clus as to what this is

I have also recently been getting a strange knocking sound from the rear of the car as i pull away anmd sometimes after I change gear at low speed... someone mentioned in another thread that this could be bearing nuts coming loose....is this a likely cause and if so where are they?
it sounds like it is coming from somewhere on the rear axle

Obviously drifting the car is going to put extra strain on drive train and a lot o things.... is thre anything i can look out for to stop problems before they occur

The knocking may be play in the final gear or somewhere else in the driveline, which will cause a slight impact at sudden acceleration.
Dunno about the wiing though, maybe damaged bearings on the prop?

Weirdly the diff on my black car gave no abnormal noises before it just went bang

If it's whining with the car stationary, this is more likely to be propshaft related. The rear end knocking sound could be anything tbh...

for some reason i think the knocking noise imaybe something to do with rear brakes... seem to be coming from hub area... ...sometimes after breaking to a standstill as i pull away the noise occurs as if something is releasing under pressure / tension.....

its been doing it a while but has suddenly got worse....is worrying me slightly that i dont know what it is

If it does it all the time, even when its in neutral and idling and gets louder when revved in neutral. Its likely to be either something wrong with the prop, or the clutch shaft bearings. Possibly might be input shaft bearing in the gearbox but haven't heard of problems with that.

Actually it could just be the gearbox being low on oil so a check of that would be a good idea. The front plug for the g/box not the back one for the diff ;)

The whining noise and the knock could be two different things. I think the whining has been covered but the knock is probably something else. Most likely if you have stock 340 rear axle set up is the torque arm. I've had problems with them coming loose. Worth having a check on that.

I'd guess that drifting, as you say has increased the strain and stress on different parts. The knocking noise might be the driveshafts, as I know Adam had play in his which resulted in a knocking when pulling away as it took up the slack.

Nessy was whining (from the box input shaft bearings?) when the rear gearbox mounts failed, causing the box to droop. New mounts (£25/pair from Volvo, shipped from Sweden on a 4 day lead time?) and it was right as rain, and within a couple of days the whining had gone. The failed mounts also producing a banging when you lifted off the throttle sharply (in gear).

Just a thought...

Interesting.....................

Gonna explore all possible / suggested causes when I get underneath it tommorow!

If it is that, you'll be able to waggle the box up and down at the back. It should be near-as-dammit rigid.
