I noticed my diff dripped a little this week, checked the torque on the end plate bolts and they were lower than the 9nm i initially set them at.

I can only imagine that the cork gasket had been compressed - back to setting again and its fine again. I'd look out for things like that when its back in the car and its done a few miles. Perhaps some material that doesn't compress as well as the OEM Volvo gasket might actually be better.

is Vart's car a B172k as well?

I ask because of the torsion damper thats still on the input shaft.

if the engine is a 1.4 you dont need it, if memory serves me right you can slide the damper off the shaft quite easily.

Hi Wouter, no Varts motor is a B14, Just havn't got around to taking the mass damper off.

Revised pix.

For those non 'techheads' Wouter is referring to the 'big green lump' on the front of the gearbox. This is in simple terms a metal weight fitted to the g/box input shaft on a rubber bush. It is there to absorb engine vibrations (or in fact harmonics of primary engine vibrations). Originally introduced on the D16 diesel models it was also adopted on the B172 (although the damper was 'tuned' to a different harmonic frequency).

As Wouter says it is not needed on B14 models and can be removed. (it is only pressed on the input shaft) It doesn't quite 'just slide of' as the rubber bush grips the shaft quite tightly but it isn't bolted or glued on and can be pulled off easily.

Thanks for pointing that out Wouter - It's very easy to assume everybody else knows what goes where. Great thing about v3m is there is always someone else to add anything to a story that you've left out.

You've really pulled there Mac sm56

Amazingly clean. You'll have to let us know your tricks of the trade (although I think I've already asked once, so that's probably a polite "Sod off, I want to win the BKV") sm56

cheers

hi there...

anyone know when volvo stopped painting the gear boxes? my 83 has a red gearbox bu my 88 has a silver ( like the pics here ) box. the 88 has 45,000 miles so its still clean.

or did I ( in 1999 ) sand my 83s gearbox ( rusty) ans incorrectly presume the casing was red? the diff housing is aluminium for cooling I guess... it does have cooling fins...

all the best

shimon
Enjoy your 300s

Volvo went over to aluminium cased M4xs around....hmm.....probably soon after that car was made. Early red ones were cast iron like the blocks, and are rumoured to be stronger.

cheers

Mornin' everyone, Bit better mood today after slaving yesterday.

1. The pix deceive - Varts box isn't really as clean as it looks, but Steve's got it. Actually I use a solvent based cleaning tank fluid brushed on followed by a pressure wash (near as damnit 'Gunk'). Lovingly caressed with a good hand cream (because it's worth it) then lightly ghost brushed with 'Frosts' detail grey applied using the wifes blusher brush - then sealed with - -- Ah I'm rambling again, disregard everything after Gunk!!!

Shimon, re box colour.
If the box is original, Red = cast iron, Silver = alloy. Alloy casings introduced with M47R 5spd. All 5spds are alloy. Cast iron boxes are painted (same paint as block), Alloy natural finish (except reconditioned unit which were sprayed a bright silver - very tacky.)
Diff units always alloy cased.

Same true on 2/7/9s M41/M45 Iron/Red. M46 Iron/Red (J type O/D alloy)
M47 Alloy/natural finish (recon painted silver).

The old 4 speed in place - just started - prob loosened etc.

All went very smooth until we came to release the handbrake cable (it passes under the front mounting frame) Cable broke at point it entered the crimping on the threaded adjuster.

Into 'Brookhouse' to pickup a new cable (16mls round trip - the pints Vart owes me are racking up.

The old unit out.
