Bodywork quotation and insurance

Post by pettaw » 14 May 2005 12:43 pm

So the engine is now ready to go in. Whilst my Mum's car was at the bodywork shop I got the guy to have a look at the 360.

There is a fair amount of rot, particularly in the sills, but also in the front panal under the fog lamps etc. The usual places I'm sure we all know about on these cars. There's also some in the wheel arches, etc etc etc.

Anyway, he reckons I won't see much change out of £1000. I've already spent that getting the engine rebuilt so I'll probably go ahead with a heavy heart and lighter wallet.

Question is is there any way to try and safeguard my investment in case, God forbid, anyone should run into the back of me? Agreed value policies? Do they do one for a 360?

Also, if Dai's (classicswede) around does he have a way of screwing an o2 sensor onto a standard 360 downpipe for my Megasquirt conversion?

O2 sensor installation is quite simple, take downpipe out, drill hole, weld nut and screw O2 sensor in. However finding a nut is bit difficult, at least in here it was.

Don't forget to get multiple quotes, but yes, I think you'll be looking in the region of 1k though. A lot of money maybe, but consider the cost of even a uber-budget new car - bearing in mind many of the lowest cost cars don't make it to an average age of 10 years now.

For what it's worth, I'm seriously considering doing exactly the same as you, albeit going for new doors too! The cost of a suitable replacement (newish V40 TD?) is far greater than the cost of making my 360 'good as new'.

You need to get a valuation, then get the car insured with an agreed value. Most mainstream insurers ought to do that for you, but Chris Knott (VOC) definitely will, and I've just got a stonking quote from them.

cheers

Chris Knott, do you think they'll insure Megasquirt.

I'll phone them up on Monday, good idea, thanks James.

Well I've just had to insure the carb kit, and from a performance point of view, that's rather more 'radical' than an EMS upgrade. In other words, if they don't bat an eyelid at twin carbs, you'll be fine with MS. I started with Adrian Flux, and then tried the CK - mainly for a laugh / ammo for VOC discussions, as they've been pants (to put it politely) in the past. Well I have to eat my words! It may be worth calling AF first to get a quote for CK to beat. I decided not to go back to Flux, in order to support the club.

Don't forget to mention that you're a VOC member :)

cheers
