Coloured Dial kits? Any interest? Need Feedback!!!!!

Post by 340GLT » 16 May 2005 01:03 pm

Hi basically a local company by me can make coloured dial kits, these items will be top notch as he makes them for mazda, nissan etc.
Well a while back i spoke to him and asked him if he would be interested and he said he could pay tooling costs but a batch would have to be made to cover this! Just wanted people to put names forward if they would definately have a set if i went ahead?
The kit would include all 5 dials. Speedo, rev, fuel, temp, amb temp, eco, and a shift up light indicator? Price would be around £25 delivered if i remember right! Dials could be any colour really but would have to be made in batches!!
Initially the dials would be same as standard but white? Or what about adding a V3M somewhere?

So come on guys i need feedback for this urgently!!!
Cheers Adam :340:

i hit no cos i thought the question is 'do you want some'

i dont actually want one, but its is a good idea, particularly if you could make them so they are black with blue light shining thru rather than green :)

Yeh thats simple as the colours are done in layers!! So instead of using a green ink you use blue!! As the dials i want are white with blue lit instead of green!!!

the thing is, on a 300, the green comes from the glass (or plastic) that sits behind the dials, i think you'd have to change that too to change the lgiht colour

I dont think it does, as i took a set of dials to see this bloke and it comes from the sheet that is the dial. It is a 1mm thick sheet of polycaronate with colours printed on it, the part the bulb shines through is clear not coloured! We examined it and any colour is a go for anything. So if you break the dials up, there is a green layer, then a red layer, then a semi clear white that the colours shine through and the colour that is visable in daylight and finally a black layer to block out unwanted light. If you take any of these layers you can substitute them for another. For instance. Blue, then Red, then Clear, so visable Blue and finally a white face.

Like the idea a lot Adam, however I can't put my name down for any I'm afraid. If they're anywhere near as good as the simple but very effective result jtbo achieved by printing his own, then they'll be excellent.

The stock gauges do indeed split down into two sheets - one green, one printed. How easy it is to split them I don't know. You could make blue illumination just by changing the filter on a stock gauge from green to blue.

If your guy is going to do illumination, I have two requests. Firstly, that the panels are made thick enough that they give even light coverage. Secondly, that the illumination is coloured stock green - either using a filter, or printing green on the reverse side. I suggest the former, so that people can use blue filters if they prefer. Working in the lighting industry, I can provide colour filters for every hue in the rainbow :-P

He was gonna use a single sheet and print specified colours onto that. I will go ahead with this but i could do with around 20 people wanting some, 15 at a push!! If i can pencil in names for now, coulours can be worked out at a later date!!

Yeah, stick me down for a set at ~£25 :) An unpopular suggestion perhaps, but maybe a marginally higher price, but lower quantity would be better, given that the Lockwood kits sell for £40+, and you're unlikely to get 20 takers. Stock (but white!) might be a good idea, then people can personalise them as they wish - whether with a V3M logo, or Fuse's R-Sport logo idea.

I like the idea of white with stock green light. I like the green, it's so 300...

If I would take one I will need one for 6 dials:

Speedo
Revs
Econo
Fuel
Amb. temp
Engine temp.

I think Adam meant 5 *as well* as the rev counter and speedo, giving you all the options (including shift-up light, so 7 faces in total). If we're being anal, we should probably do a clock too...?! Not that I'm suggesting we do... Of course now Hugh will probably want his alternative style econ gauge doing too :-P

Shift up light... hmmm never seen that one...

But with the control lights and the 6 dials I count 7 faces too...
Speedo BIG DIAL
Revs BIG DIAL
Econo SMALL DIAL
Fuel SMALL DIAL
Amb. temp SMALL DIAL
Engine temp. SMALL DIAL
Control lichts

You want the warning lights in white too? Eek, I think that might look nasty :(

BOSCH!

What about KPH speedos? Do we bother with the Smiths gauges? ;) We could go on forever here. I think it's a very good idea to get the econ and ambient temp ones done, but I think anything more than that might be overkill.
