I speak dutch but the message is long to read (5 pages)... I see our friend Andries in the topic. His project was to use an Alpine turbo motor in his Volvo 340 VARIO!! And I think it's working!

Just have read the whole topic, the car works fine, more than 90hp with a variomatic, it's a great bet!

renault alpine

Post by mgarageu » 10 Jun 2004 09:22 pm

renault 5 is one of the greatest cars of the xx-century. was sold in United States as "LE CAR". everybody who knows french better than me, understands the point, i suppose. does anybody like macho horsepower driving little kitten-car? somebody has written that Enzo Ferrari loved such kind of things...

there was such one. with v6 turbo, platic body and rear wheel drive. GTT already means Grand Turismo Turbo.

I don't see a turbo on that Alpine engine...in fact it doesn't even look like the Alpine engines I've seen before!

The GTT had a 1.4 (OHC version?) motor rather like the B14, but with a turbo to carb setup (I believe). The stock power is worse than a B200E, but the beauty is the wealth of aftermarket tuning parts!

It's an Alpine engine with B14 parts (or B14 engine with Alpine parts... sm14 sm61 )

Looks like a B14 with an alpine crank / pistons, and maybe an alpine head (OHC?). Interesting project!

Hello guys

Whell thats my project!
I just say it this evening.

Iam still a member of the Renault tuning club so that explanes wy it is standing there.
My first plan was fitting an GTT engine in my car but i figured out that the turbo was getting in the rong angle.
Where the heaterhousing is.

So i looked into placing an Alpine/volvo engine.
I even had bought one from a scrapyard.
But that would be to expencive with a customexsaust etc.
And iam thinking about competing the youngtimer rallys here in Holland in the future in an 340 cvt.
And thos cars don't have a FIA homliogation with a Alpine engine or GT Turbo engine.
So i took a standard B14 engine and lookt what could be altert.

I alraidy had the new engine out again because at the company who made everything together made some "small"? mistakes.
sm49

This is what I came up with.

ENGINE B14-4e

-All new bearings
-New pistonrings
-Just got my engine back with new pistonrings the first time they were rongly put in.

Everthing has been repaired properly at no cost.
-Cyllinders re-grinded.
-Crankshaft pulley/crackshaft/flywheel/clutch pressure plate have been balanced.
-Pistons/liners are balanced out.
-This is a great mod. 6000rmp with no pain or stange noises.
-Hydraulic timing chain tensioner from an Renault 5 Alpine
-Cill.head has been renewed and grinded off to 10,5:1 compr.rate.
This is something wat i am about to change back to 9,2:1.
With a new cill.head/and inlet manifold with I have flowed.
And these cill.heads left the factory with very badly formed inlet ports.
And the inlet man. has to fit perfectly.
But it all looks very promesing

-Faster Camshaft.
I have ordert one from Catcams in Belgium.
Cost: 160 euro.
Camshaft nr.5500310
Its duration has been primiary alter and not so the valvo lift.0,5 mm orso.
Anyway its FIA GR.N spec.
It's a very drastic change of the "karakter"? of the engine
-Rockershaft from an Renault GT turbo.
These are much stronger and a "bit"? lighter.
Keepin the higher revs in mind.
-If've changed the Renix ignision to points because my camshaft.
-Fitted an weber 32Dir58T Renault 5 Alpine carb.
That makes the engine a bit more eager.

Future plans
An dubbel 36/40weber conversion.
But that's very expencive

EXAUST

-Std. But brandnew exept for the Cat witch is offcourse empty.
-Fitted a selfheating Lambda sond. In the Cat.
It's a heated one because its at a distance away from the exaust manifold.
-a big Fuel/air gauge on the dash.
Brandname is Illumation?
And it has 19 leds on it.
But that thing is still on backorder.
With this I can watch my feulmixure setting wile driving.
So perfect carb. settings shouldn't be such a problem in the future.

Transmision
I have a CVT trans.
But its not std. anymore.
Togetter with a good friend who has a Daf66 1300 marraton we've been customizing.

-The 4 way-valve can be controlled with 2 switches one for kickdown (Normaly enginebrake for in mountans)
And the other one for overdrive.
And this really works great don't forget to turn your overdrive off before you stand still or else you're burning clutch to get moving again.

-A big vacuum tank made of big pvc piping, two hoses, and a one way valve.
One hose go's to the inlet man. with a one way valve in it.
The other one go's straight to the EMVK(4way valve.)
When using the kick down and exellarate to 100 km/u the effect is that you reatch 5500/6000rpm before getting to 100 km/u.
So you are using the max. power the engine delivers.
And trust me that's a big difference.
An other effect is that the changing from kick down to overdrive(and vice versa) is much quiker.

Furture plans
Iam thinking about mayby changing everything to a special 5 speed trans.
With a lightend flywheel and shortshifter.
But first thing first.

SUSPENSION.

-Alraidy fitted orignal Volvo GT rear shockabsorbers.
There are great , as good as new and 50 euro's from the Dealer.(Very lucky!)

Future plans.

-Yellow adjustable konis.
Specially made for the 360 cup here in Holland.
But not cheap 125 euro's eatch.

- 360 GLT front suspension strut and springs.

- Strutbrace (Needs to be specialy made.)

BRAKESYSTEM

Future plans.

-360 brake drums at the back.
These are 2cm bigger only the 340 handbrake cables don't fit.
So these have to be replaced also.

-Feredo brake pads front.

-ventilated and grooved front disks.

INTERIOR

-I now have a almost complete GLT dashboard.
Only thing I need to build in is a outside temp gauge.
I alriady have it plus the sensor but I diden't have time to fit it.

-Midconsole with working oil press. and oil temp. gauges.

-Al new rubbers for the doors/boot.
Its very qieut now but now the side windows are hauwling!

- Alpine 4x60 installed with only front speaker installed.
- Philips 10cm PRS series Composet installed.
You wouldn't believe how good its sound alraidy.

Future plans
-maybe an momo sportsteering wheel.
-rear/side window rubbers.

Ice.
I have some idieas already.
But I let you guys know when I made a choice.

Well this is my story so far.
Feel free too ask anything.

I even had to type it twice because I lost the first verion.
