2ltr into a 1.7...400 series

Post by daffodil » 22 Jun 2006 08:55 pm

hi i know a few of you have done this mod, and as it happens i have now acquired a 2ltr engine only 68000 miles as well
i have changed a lot of the 1.7 engines but i need to know what is involved in fitting the 2ltr....i am thinking is the manifold a straight swap over....your comments are welcome

Only person I know of that has done the swap is Dai and not sure if his setup will be different due to using LPG. I'd think you need to swap manifold/s and possibly the sump but thats just guessing really, is it carb or injection?

I think it'll just be a case of pan, (oil) pump, mounts and go! Don't forget to re-jet the carb for the larger engine. Did the 440 carb models use a larger carb? I fear the 2.0 lump would be wasted on such a small carb (much like the 360 B200K).

cheers

Ok you need to fit the 1.7 sump flywheel spigot bearing (little bearing in the end of the crank 400's dont have them). You also need to fit the 1.7 engine mounting brackets and alternator brackets. You must use a 2ltr starter motor as the 1.7 one is to big and will not fit.
The 1.7 exhaust manifold will fit but dont expect the exhaust to last long - I;ve sheared 3 flanges on the front pipe!! Now running a 1.8 manifold.
The 1.7 carb will run it but will need adjusting. Would be best if you use the 400 injection system (if you do this then you need the 400 flywhell crabk sensor and renix unit)

Hope this gives you a better idea of what is involved.

I am not using a carb or injection. The manifold I have I a early twin choke injection manfold but I have blanked the injectors in the head.

If you are going to go down the injection path then you will need the ecu wiring loom etc complete with afm and all sensors. I am consider doing this and using the injector pulse to run a gas injection system.
