Ok this is my first post here, so hi ti everyone
I want to build a trike and i have been offered a 340 gl.
I can get a suitable frame built, but could i encounter any problems i.e axle mounting / issues shortening the prop / gear box mounting / linkages cables / lines etc.
are there any undercar photos available
regards
trix

haynes has pretty good pics of the underbody.
I wouldn't think you'd have much difficulty with any of the mountings. The only trouble is shortening the prop.
I would think you would want to have something custom made up. One of the guys put a B18FT engine from a 480 turbo into his 340 and he got in touch with a company call Recoprop. They made up a solid propshaft with a couple of UJs each end. He did it for reasons of power which the original propshaft with rubber doughnuts each end wouldn't have been able to handle, but even so it might be a better option rather than trying to cut the propshaft tube and weld together, cos you wouldn't be able to get it balanced properly and as it runs at crank RPM that would be dodgy.
Other stuff like the gearshift linkage etc could all fairly easily be cut and rewelded I reckon.
Hope that helps.

Hi Pettaw thanks for the info.
I went to Halfords couldnt find a manual and the young lad behind the counter - well his eyes just glazed over when i asked him.
Also tried local second hand book shop, matey just smiled at me.
Ok wild guess here - would you know the rough weight of engine / axle / gear box / prop together ???.
Also width of outer limits of engine itself not the engine bay

Ronnie's right, ebay will have Haynes for Volvo 300 series, and maybe even Amazon if you wanna buy new.
Erm, very rough guess based on not a lot apart from how damn heavy they were. Engine, it depends whether it was 1.4, or 1.7 but approx 100Kg, propshaft 20Kg and gearbox approx 40 Kg.

Not to bad on the weight side then, i can go up to 1000kgs total unladen, but when you go that heavy it goes into the ugly beast category

Look forward to seeing it in BSH some time soon...

blimey, a really late one. How many gadgets has it got. Those late ones tended to have everything in sight thrown on cos the factory was looking to get rid of stuff.
The weight of the entire 340 1.4 is approx 1,000 Kg, so I would think you'd be fine on that front.
The clutch is at the front of the car. It transmits drive via a propshaft spinning at crank RPM to the gearbox which is directly in front of the rear diff at the back of the car.

I havent seen it yet, as far as the clutch goes do i assume its a standard clutch and drive plate etc or isit a vario thingy.
If its ok to use, i will offer on this site what ever is left FREE of CHARGE as im only interested in the lump gearbox prop and associated bits.
as for the shell and interior it will be first come first served

welcome mate - i don't think you'll get any hard feelings from converting a 300 into a trike, theres still plenty around for some to be used for interesting projects - as long as its not currently immaculate
