Just wtached the vidoe of you going round a track. FANTASTIC! Looks like you're having great fun! Top stuff. 340pw

What have you actually done to your 360, coz i'm sure mine would be handling as well as that!!

Doing a road rally next weekend in mine though, so that should be amusing! Not sure if the old girl will cope, but we'll give it a damn good go!

thanks
thats what its about for my brother and me-see who can do the biggest slide !! well its a bit different in the woods when trees are whistling past you......
ive got a few sets of regs in front of me,the club my dad is in, is holding "the 3 counties" tonight. trouble is my brother hasnt got his license this year so no navigator at the minute(he'll just have to get his money out).we still can do 12 cars tho which are still great fun !! also there is an autocross this month which my club runs so i may enter it. if i do i will put the camcorder inside for the in car view :D . i wont win because on the line i usually just let them all go,then go for it on clear track-although its a non-contact sport they usuall bump eachother and i dont want to put any MORE dints in it ! may get a cup for RWD class as there isnt many who enter it,also i may get the highest club member!!??
i will soon put more video of the car onto pc as soon as i get time-this time it will have sound !!

I think i've heard of the 3 Counties, although i could quite easily be confusing it with something else at this kate stage on a saturday night!

I'm doing the Bullnose road rally in mine, not a particularly demanding event, but should be good enough for a laugh or 2, which is what its all about for me. Might get a 12 car in next week if i have the time/money

Bullnose rally / road rallying in a 340 1.4

Post by x19dude » 07 Sep 2004 03:03 pm

Hi Carl,
Just a quick question - Whats it like doing a road rally in a 340? I have done them in Audi Quattros, 100's, lancias HF turbo and Integrale and even an x1/9 but never in my 340. I was thinking a bit of rear wheel action might be good for a change. I'm a former member of OUMDC and know a lot of the guys in OMC having been on the bullnose a couple of times in the last few years. Is there anything I should watch out for (aside from the obvious appaling body roll!) Let us know,
Cheers,
Paul.

I did one 12 car in my 340 DL as a laugh, nothing competitive. It was completely standard (unless you count kanckered shock absorbers as a modification ;)). TBH i was pleasntly surprised at how well it performed for such a heavy and underpowered car. The engine didnt complain about being thrashed alnight, and despite masses of body roll its handling was quite well balanced. There was no understeer and oversteer only really happened when i wanted it to. It even handbraked well round a triangle, and with plenty of power after the initial turn in it flew round and took me fishtailing down the road, much to the photographers delight!

Basically its a tough old brick that will give you laugh if nothing else. Hopefully the GLT will be just as fun without being too much of a handful!

Do you know anything about the Bullnose this year? I know the first section will be a 'special test' of some sort, which i think i'm going to struggle with if its a mini autotest and dry, as the big ol' 360 isnt particularly nimble, with the new tyres it probably wont want to oversteer on dry tarmac, and the handbrake doesnt work :( sm2

Are you out on this BN this year, marshalling or competing?

Hi Carl,
I'll see what I can find out for you about the special test. Unfortunately, I won't be on it this year - I've moved up to Aberdeen, so am not down south anymore. Having said that, I'm still in touch with a few of the guys. They helped the OUMDC organise the targa rusticana(clubs historic event) and in return, they always help out on the buillnose. Best of luck in the GLT - it sounds like it should be much more fun than the DL. I would recommend spots though - 340 lights are really really crap! :D
Cheers,
Paul.

Just got some pre-event gubbins thru the post. The start is at Prodrive in Banbury and the special test is in a car parl there somewhere. You get a little map and i'm guessing theres a little route made out with cones. Should be interesting!

Cant afford spots, so standard headlights it is! Might get some 100w bulbs though as they should help a little.

convert your fogs to driving lights ! just need different lenses. you can get those real cheap and gnasty units(think its ring who make them)for 10-15 £ a pair !! not the best but cheap, + with 100w headlamps ,it would be a little better than standard, at little cost.
my brother is lighting guru-he has so many sets of spots its unreal.at easter in scotland ,at a car boot sale he bought a set of the above ring lights for £4-brand new in the box with lamps  . he always goes on about a kc daylighter i broke, when i put the 360 into a bush  . we use em cos they 150w's each(originally made as aicraft landing lights  ), and when set up correct you can see for miles !! he also got pairs of hella's,oscars etc....always the same, when your looking for parts-you cant find them..buy things even if you dont need them-if they cheap(and you can afford it of course).
tyres is another fettish of his-we always take the P,saying he must have some kind of rubber fettish !!! we got about 25 rims and 80 tryres at the moment 13+14" .

Good idea about the fogs, may look into that at the weekend!
I've got some Cibie Oscars in the garage, but TBH i cant be bothered to fit them, and IME once you put bloody great spotlights on the front of a car you tend to put it nose first into something solid!!!

I've got 4 spare Volvo rims hanging about the garage now (thanks 5lab BTW, i think that was down to one of your posts). but theres another 10 or so Pug rims and a ton of bits laying about to, not to mention the spare 309 soon-to-be stage car and a Spitfire. Thats what happens when you get a couple of car nuts living together!

The women of the house wont allow car bits in the house (although i've snuck a few in recntly). However we are spilling out from the garage and into the back garden now :)

  well would you look at this-slandering his bro's good name on a public forum
shame on you
As for a rubber fettish-I see it more as a longer term strategy for global domination in the competition tyre dept

Re the KC debacle-if you managed to blag a new set for £ 40 and the very same night you fit em there is some hedge activity resulting in your lil beauties demise you'd shed a tear sm16

Time for bed now I'm pi$$ed sm4

Ooh a bump!

Ages ago you guys mentioned that you had an LSD for sale, but it went very quiet on that front soon afterwards. What's the news?

cheers

Hello James, you deliver the hen's teeth and I'll sell you the trippy diff.
The news is we got a 360 3dr for road rallies so those slippy diffs will be gettin' some use.
By the way can you prove 40's were a genuine volvo option-if you can it would help-do you take paypal?

best regards Sven

I thought you had two (one locker, one LSD), and you might be selling the one you're not using...? If you could positively identify either unit, that would be a very good start!

There's proof all over this site!
This is probably a good start...
