Speaker wires to the boot...... :S

Post by DeKay » 06 Sep 2004 01:09 pm

I can't see an obvious route from the head unit to the boot for running speaker wire to the back shelf... has anyone got any clues as to where to go? My aim is/was to go down the side of the centre console, but once i get to the passenger footwell I have no ideas, unless i go across under the seat and under the side trim, which i don't particularly fancy, as it doesn't go all the way back and i want it to be as neat as humanly possible!

Any suggestions, pictures, diagrams, anything would be greatfully recieved

Cheers
Dave

to the side of the sill, then along the sill, under the carpet, under the rear seats and out under the carpet in the boot. careful of your parcelshelf thou - they dont support 6x9s for long

I took mine behind the glovebox (carpet under it comes out if you take out the four poppers) then as 5lab says just run it under the sills. Cant see it at all :D

I'm using my pioneers with 30oz magnets, so that fact was always going to be an issue! I'm intending to re-inforce the forward half with some 1/2" MDF to give it extra mass (extra mass = more stable speaker = better response) and give it a better chance of holding the speakers up, i may have to recarpet the shelf when i'm done tho, so any ideas for that?

I'll do a picture log of it all and put it up as a "how to" for future reference, but it won't get properly started till wednesday (busy day tomorrow!)

have a look at the pics of mine if you want some inspiration, the whole lower part has been replaced with 18mm mdf, which is 3 layers thick (thats 54mm, or about 2") in parts. it aint ever gonna break :)

Hopefully by the time we get our lazy arses together enough to have a meet, my forthcoming uber-amazing sound system might even be finished! So far its sounding a bit crap, but then if you knew what it consists of....

(Next devious plan involves raiding the speakers from a scrap V40 = cheap and pretty damn nice!)

If anyone is prepared to offer me decent money for a pair of mids from a Rockford Fosgate 5" componant set (£110 worth...but minus the crossovers and tweeters), they're yours.

cheers

you'll need to make a completely new bottom section as the 300 parcel shelf cant take the weight. it took me 2 days to make mine from 18mm mdf (which is tripple thickness in some parts) as i only had hand-tools.

yes. when i brought the car it had the shelf without the wood, and it had colapsed. i tried fixing with fibreglass, and it colapsed again, i then tried strengthening with wood but there was no way of doing that without wood above the carpet which looked sh*te.

grace has actually got a busted parcelshelf already, and theres never been speakers in it - guess she'll be in for a transplant when nessy dies

To be honest....I'm rather confused by this. Have your parcel shelves been abused Hugh, cos I think mine'd take a pair of 6x9s ok.

cheers

the problem is all the force goes on a *TINY* piece of overlap where the shelf fits into the car. its like 3mm wide - have a look at the one on yours and look what happens when you push down on the shelf, most of the shelf in my cases have been fine, just the very edges are bent upwards and the shelf falls into the boot very often

Your shelf wasn't in good condition, cause to make it collapse, you must put (very) heavy things on it!! If it's in good condition, I'm sure it's unecessary to add something...
