Mono Tubes

Post by classicswede » 30 Oct 2006 12:52 am

Don't you just hate it when someone posts about something they have done to their car and not post any pictures? Sure you do! well that is exactly what I am doing now! :P

I've completed the conversion from normal twin tube front dampers to a lovely pair of billy mono tubes! :D

It's taken me nearly a year from when I got the dampers to do it - i now wish I had done it soomer.

I will be posting pics later and let you know how it is done.

As far as I'm aware, the standard 300 series design is a monotube with an insert, but this mono tube will probably be a 'standard' (52mm?) tube which takes any old Billy insert, and threaded on the outside for use with a standard coil-over arrangement.

cheers

99% of std dampers are twin tube dampers. This means you have the outer casing iner caseing and as normal a piston rod.
A Mono tube only has the outer casing with a piston rod just the same. The other difference with this is the gas is in a seperate chamber so it can not mix with the oil.

In a McPhurson strut the piston rod is used to locate the road wheel. Doing this puts massive strain on the damper seals. With a mono tube set the damper is positioned upside down and the outer shell takes all the strain. Also with a mono tube you have a top bearing so the damper seal do not get rubbed by the wheels turning.

I'm sure I have a good article explaining all.

I do hope to be able to supply this converion to any one who wants it.
