340 Gear Shift Problem

Just picked up a 1.4 340 (1.7 swap to be done). Not had a chance to look at the car properly as yet, but it's possible to shift straight into reverse, without lifting the safety lever (?).

As you can imagine, this can lead to a 'colourful' shift if you miss 1st and go straight to reverse!

I'm taking the engine out in a week or so to replace it with a 1.7, but anyone got a quick idea on what could be broken, that way I can get a part before I drop the engine?

thanks
Chris :)

perhaps the reverse lockout , piece of bent metal isnt there ? sits on top of the shifter housing with two m5 bolts holding it on .

if its not something to do with that , could be interesting .

Its either missing or loose I would say.

Another vote for either the bracket on the car or the 'stub' on the stick being missing / mis-adjusted.

cheers

another vote for the section below the gaitor - its just a plastic piece that stops the gear lever going into reverse.

nothing on the g/box to stop you going into reverse

Changed the engine and I had a look at the shifter; the safety gate is in place, but the actual mechanism inside the lever is broken. The plastic bit that should move has fallen to the bottom, allowing you to shift into reverse

New gear lever required!

Thanks for the info all. :)
