There is no 365. ;) 345 exists though and it's just a 340 with 5-doors. I don't remember when they dropped the last number which indicated number of doors but 343 is 3-door 340, 345 is 5-door etc...

From 1983, the cars called 340 (renault engine) and 360 (volvo engine).

Before, the cars called 343 (threedoor) and 345 (five door). No matter what engine.

There where a few 363, with a V6

The MKII was also called 343, or 345. For a very short time. They had a split side-front window.

Well my registration says "2 door sedan." :D

363CS was a prototype version of a PRV engined 300-series. Volvo's intention was to race 300-series with V6 (presumably in Group-B) and they would've needed to make model for sale with V6 so they could homologate 300-series with V6. I think costs rose too high. (And of course if their interests were in Group-B, whole series was banned at the end)

363CS proto is nowadays located at the Pi Walfridson's private museum.

Pi Walfridson was a driver at the Volvo rallycross team back then and won the championship with 343 turbo in 1980 and Per Engseth placed 3rd at the same year, also driving a 343 turbo. Not too bad, considering who they were racing against, second was Martin Schanche with Ford Escort RS1800. 4th and 5th places were also won by 343 turbos.. It was quite a damn good rally car, even though not many know that Volvo raced 300-series also back then.. 343 turbo went from 0 to 100km/h in 3.2s. 8)

Fuse you never fail to amaze me.

Any idea what kind of BHP the 343turbo was kicking out for that kind of 0-60 time

Haha thanks! :)

Yeah the Renault version had the smallest engine and 276hp and it had best acceleration :P Weight was below 1000kg though so it was light. Of course gearings were such that it would go like hell below 200km/h, topspeed with rally gearings was something like 170-180 I think.

I've got an article in finnish about the 343 turbo.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/v ... oRC_s2.jpg
http://koti.mbnet.fi/mtn/images/autot/v ... oRC_s3.jpg

It had 1.4 bored to 1.7 and a HEMI head from Alpine R5 department. Turbo was KKK unit.

This one is also interesting. A 343 4X4 with 16V over 2.8l redblock (2878cc), 380hp NA. 8)

http://www.pukema.com/lehdet/343_4wd.jpg

Rear diff is titanium ZF unit, front diff is from BMW 320. Gearbox is getrag race box, gear train is made by Ferguson, power ratios are 45% front 55% rear, clutch is from Saab rallycar, vented discs all around. 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 secs and from 0 to 178km/h in 7.5 secs.

Crazy car.. It said in the text that future plans involve turbocharger and planned power output would be about 580hp, but I don't know if it ever happened, because it says in the text that he heat problems with the 16V head when they tested turbo. But still 380hp NA is crazy enough. :D

There were several 363CS prototypes....PI just has one of them. At least one was crashed...but there are probably at least 5 still out there....somewhere. Volvo themselves have one, we believe.

The final digit in the model number was carried on in certain circumstances after the badging changed to '0' - for example in the VIN number (which, as an aside, always reads 34x, even it it's a 36x...wierd!), and enthusiasts may use the door designation as a quick way or saying if it's a 3dr hatch, 5dr hatch, or a saloon.

All things are possible, and sometimes users have been known to play with badges ;) Here in the UK, at least, the '3' and '5' were dropped when the 360 came out.
