Hello, can someone let me know how to cure an engine which runs on after being turned off (1988, 1.4). Its just had a new idle solenoid and now runs so well, it doesn't want to stop. Cheers, bogbasic.

Do you run premium in it?

I had an old hiace that would run on if you used normal unleaded, but wouldn't on premium. when you turn the key off it just kills spark, but if the motor is in a condition to pre ignite then it can keep firing, and sucking in fuel out of the carb, and firing... the more stable nature of higher octane fuels reduces the chance of pre ignition, so might cure it.

it a case of the engine internals/spark plugs getting hot enough to continue running after ignition has been stoped. depending on how long its running on for could be bad for your engine mine runs on a little but is no problem.

It was idle speed - found advice in Haynes manual. Lowered the tickover by 100 rpm and the problem has gone.

Yeah, only just saw this thread (my internet has only just returned) but I noticed my car do this when I adjusted the idle up a bit much. Good that its sorted now though.
