What is this?

Hi,
as you may know my 1988 360 GLT has been in storage for the last 9 years, upon inspecting the vehicle, the only badly rusted part is under the front of the car, it is like a thick ( looks about 6 mm) flat plate that runs between the right and left of the car, just behind the sump, I dont know what it is, what its purpose is, or where to get a replacement.

Any help would be greatly appreciated
Cheers Jason

Hmm, can you identify it in this diagram? Maybe the crossmember?

Hi
Yes you re right it is the crossmember, I got a manual this morning (off ebay 99p).

Why has it rusted so much worse than any thing else?

How hard to remove/refit?

and HOW MUCH?

cheers
Jason

If you have the part number, a quick call at the dealers' will clarify that. But I wouldn't be too optimistic ... If not, then ask around if someone can recommend someone to weld it up for you.

It may have been through some mud and then parked up with salty, dirty water trapped against the steel. They do collect muck between the crossmember and steering rack if there's no plastic undertray. Beware, the crossmember may now be unsafe if it's extensively rusted. I had one which was paper thin and definitely not strong enough.

3277915?
Hi,
Im struggling to tell from the 3d drawings which is the front crossmember, I think its number 16 part number 3277915,
but I dont want to call the volvo stealers and give them the wrong part number, and buy something thats no doubt bloody expensive and isn t right!
So if someone can tell me for definate, what the correct part number for the front crossmember, the beam that runs from side to side, just behind the sump, between the left and right suspension I would be grateful.
Cheers
Jason

Oh just wondering, has any one asked a Volvo dealer if they can give a list of parts still available for the Volvo 300?
Ill be going to my local one in the next few days, do you think its worth asking?
and if they can and will, are you allowed to post the list? sm6 :?:

Jason, if they do have it, just be grateful! I think you're worrying about something which won't happen TBH.

My French is pretty lousy, but you may not be the only one with this problem:

Perhaps it's worth sending Aymat a PM?

George Mitchell of the FOTV3 got a list, it was printed in the club magazine about 6months ago. I doesn't show shared parts, only 300 specific, but Andy Pettaw went through and noted what each part was next to the part number.

I have a couple of crossmembers here, I'll have to check them over though. Postage is likely to be quite a lot.

Cheers John,
Im going to get under the car again in the next few days and give the crossmember a damn good rub down with a wire brush, Im hoping its not sm50 but to be honest it doesnt look promising, to give you some idea if you think how the safety rails on the titanic look now, you get the idea!
