Volvo 740 Transmission Oil (I know, not a 300 series lol)

Hi guys, my first post on here! I'm friends with Andy Ponting (of red 340 with Renault 1.8 16v conversion (in progress) fame) and he pointed me in the direction of this forum!

Anyway! Im a Volvo fan too, I have a 1989 740 GLE 2.3 (B230E). Myself and Andy are doing a full service this weekend but I'm a little baffled as to which transmission fluid I need. Apparently the gearbox I have is an M46 - its a manual with 4spd + overdrive. I know I need just over 2ltrs of oil, but I don't know what grade. A member of another Volvo forum suggested ATF Type F - i.e. Automatic tranny oil - this is apparently what he put in his 740! However GSF has said I simply need FUCHS Titan XTR 5W-30 oil.

Any help and advice will go a long way with me haha, so many thanks in advance!

Jonny.

The recommendation for the M45 / M47 300-series gearboxes (originally based on 200 gearboxes, so I don't see why your 700 should be much different) is ATF Type A Suffix A. The recommendation these days however is that 10w40 Magnatec engine oil should be used:

Check out the Castrol engine oil recommendations:

As with the 300 series, Castrol now say "For older RWD models an alternative recommendation of Magnatec 10W-40 A3/B3 engine oil was made at the request of Volvo UK who do not wish TQF to be used in these applications, contrary to recommendations in vehicle handbooks"

Cheers
