if i take the engine out this week i'll definatly miss the 4th of april trackday deadline. so i'm gonna "kwikshit" fix the exhaust by MIG welding the pipe back together and after the 4th april trackday the engine will come out for the new stainless manifold positioning and welding!

at the Elandrun track i had a blast today since it was WET!!, there weren't a lot of 300's (only 3) but; Ronald Romme's restaurated 2.3 powered 360 GLT http://www.volvo300mania.com/forum-uk/v ... f=5&t=5570 got first price in the modified class!

among all the cars were lovely classic amazon's, p544, a few old 240's, a few 7 series including very quick turbodiesels and offcourse a few highpower 850's and C70's, fastest spec car was a white C70, 390bhp; way too overkill for the frontwheels on this small track but very cool to watch and hear.

i made a total of 5 runs, first 2 were disqualifications since i made a mistake at the start cutting a corner; i wasn't the only one so a official modified the track. then i was drifting my way to a nice time too but hit a pylon (5sec penalty) and a few bends later i spinned out. the run after that i managed to spin out on the very same place

the 5th run went perfect and i was drifting my way to a reasonable quick time, nothing to be ashamed of! i didn't win a trophey for quick times but as an official said, if there was a price for the most spectacular driver; i would have won it :D

most of the time you here people shouting that they are good drivers but the car is a useless piece of shit. well, in my case it is the exact opposite. the 340T is so wellbalanced and drives so good that at this time i am nowhere near capable of getting the max result out of it; the thing that has to learn and get better is literally located on the drivers seat. this doesn't mean i stop improving the car though

unfortunatly the road back didn't go as planned... 10minutes away from the circuit i suddenly saw smoke in the rearview mirror, kicked on the clutch and the engine idled very smooth; i didn;t have a clue what was going on so i tried driving on, more smoke. i shut the engine of and rolled the car out; placed it next to the road and opened the bonnet; then i saw probably the most scary thing i've ever seen happening right before my very eyes, the engine caught fire. i saw the entire build and even the enormous stack off bills for the car parts flashing in my head while i was running to grab my fire extinquisher. it was under the passenger seat but somehow i couldn't find and get it, so practically without hope i despiratly desided to try and blow the fire out and by a f*cking miracle that worked! the flames were gone and i kept blowing on it untill the smoke cleared..

time to investigate the damage; oilfeed nipple on top of the turbo broke right off spraying oil all over the turbo and manifold
Image

so; i could forget about repairing it on site, sat down for a minute or 5 to regain my senses and called a few mates who eventually towed me for 100km back home. tonight will be a special night, since i know i am very lucky that my car is at the house and not burned out on a local street 100km away
Image

a big lesson well learned, that fire extinquisher will be relocated to a spot where i can instantly grab it in case it goes wrong.

a shitload of great movies, pics etc were made today; for the next few days i'll see what i can dig up on the internet and post it here!

Good thing that the car didn't burn and everything's ok!

By looking at the pics, it seems that the fitting on the oilfeed was way too tall. There was too much moment of force at the threaded part because of the tall oilfeed nipple. (Heavy hydraulic hose causes quite a lot of strain on the fittings if fittings are too tall. I've also seen many oil pressure gauge senders snapping off from the block because of too tall adapters/fittings)

I would suggest to install a braided teflon hose with a proper size fitting, that way there's no need for tall adapter fittings and teflon handles the heat of the turbo no problem.

Did the turbo bearings suffer any damage?

thx for the input Fuse, but the length of the nipple can't be the problem

ever since i replaced the turbocharger and had to make a new nipple it leaked slightly, i think that the weld was bad or a crack has appeared while welding/cooling down. the hose is tension free and not as heavy on the thread in the turbo/nipple as it looks, in fact we use an exact copy of this system at a special type of volvo penta engine for the terminal tractors

turbo is definatly KIA, about 25sec with no oilfeed going into a hot turbo; if the bearing aint dead the charger must have 9 lives..

a slight bit of good news; a guy that saw me driving sunday went on the v3c forum to check my car out; found out about the KIA turbocharger and placed a nice message, he might have a GT2560R lying around without the oem nissan bolton fittings; by coincidence that ballbearing turbo is very similar to the model i wanted to place in a later stage

engine will definatly come out soon and then i'll fabricate the stainless manifold, place the new turbo and make a stainless downpipe aswell :D while engine is out all the senders will be given a proper location and maybe i'll modify the dash aswell while i'm at it; so once more a shitload of work to get done

more pics :D

a freaking busy week has passed without any work done on the 340T, except for the fact that i took the turbocharger off the engine and had a closer look at it, bearing seems to have survived since it has very little play   but i have allready decided that engine will come out for the stainless manifold and it will only be installed along with a new turbocharger, can't wait till my salary gets paid out  exhaust line will be redone to the original location at the rear since it will be bodykitted in the future and i'll make a few stainless bolton flanges instead of the current clamped type connections allowing easyer removal, a flexible piece will come right after the downpipe to reduce torque forces on the manifold, the current downpipe will be equipped with lambdasond bung and offcourse; made out of stainless steel :D the exhaust will be hung to the body on a few more places, allready figuring some bracketing out at the gearselector support holes etc. so big plans made, a full stainless steel exhaust line and a new upgraded turbo, it looks like it will be a rollerbearinged GT2560R or something like that, i like the fact that this charger suits up to 300bhp on small volume engines so it will spool like crazy

but first things first, i only have 1 reliable daily ride atm so first i'll get the 343 back in proper running condition. after that all attention will go to this.

and besides the boring talk some more pics of the Elandrun from van Ivo Peters:
