yeh lol thats what happened the first couple of times i tried it. you just hit the brake harder when you try to vlip the throttle at the sime time and you end up slowing down too much or smacking your head on something...

once youre used to it you can do it in ANY car. anyone every driven a cinquecento? then you'll know how close together the pedals are. i drove my mates the other day and managed to do it in that.

after a while it all becomes second nature and you'll be doing it left, right and centre. my mates love it when i do it because its like a race car type shifty thing and its hard to master (no theyre not chavs or any other form of retardedness). i love it as well because it gets heads turning when you brake hard and blip the throttle on downshift and sounds the nuts.

Fast 1st to 2nd shifts should be possible. I'd suggest you either have worn syncros, a dragging clutch, or knackered old gearbox oil.

cheers

*Attempted* it in my dads v70 D5 but pedals are a bugger to get to, double-de for overtaking etc though and works alright, throttle response is just awful, had to get used to it after having a f**ked gearbox in my S40 aswell

Yeah, I find the throttle in the 850 a bit slow to respond

The D5 is a turbo yeah but nothing to do with spool time as its under no load with the clutch depressed as you blip the throttle, its just bloody slow responding lol, you can stamp it in neutral and have your foot off the throttle before it revs! Modern cars eh!

D5 is fly-by-wire, so that won't help. The S70 is a little bit like that (like your folks' 850, I bet, MJ), but I'd put that down to the way the EMS works, and a very heavy flywheel....plus a rather misadjusted throttle cable, but I'm lazy :)

Yes, the 850 is rather slow revving up and down, which I presume is a heavy flywheel. It makes for a very relaxing drive, and you don't need to take so much care when gear changing. With the 340 when you dip the clutch, the revs plummet unless your careful with the throttle.

That's not what I meant though, I think it's the drive by wire thinge making it electrically operated, and it just seems like there a response lag between when you hit the throttle, and when the revs start to rise.

Modern cars indeed. The 850 is undeniably better on the motorway run to uni with all the space, and it happy cruises at 80 or so. *cough* I mean 70 officer ;) but on a short trip on an A road I'd choose the 340 every time :)

850s and most phase 1 x70s are cable throttle....so it's gotta be something else. ;)

i cant remember where it was, but somwehere on the tinternet i read that some car had a spring on the throttle and that supposedly slowed down the response and everything. the article showed how to take it out and make it work nicely.

maybe this is the case with the 850 throttle?

Loads of cars have throttle-release springs...supposedly for a smoother gearchange.
