Rear Brakes 360

Anyone experienced locking up of one side of rear brakes under moderate pedal pressure. There is no vibration or metal to metal sounds or pulling....

Could be worth swapping wheels from side to side to find whether the problem is with the tyres?

Hello, long time since we've heard from you! Has it only appeared since the damp, wet, cold weather, and does it disappear after several braking attempts or a few minutes of driving? I have experienced something similar with the rear drums on a van, where by if I left the handbrake on overnight, the first few braking attempts the next day it would lock up the o/s rear wheel. I never got time to investigate it properly, but it was after a garage had replaced the brake cylinders and rear shoes, as sadly I didn't have the time to do it. It could well be that the shoes are worn out, if at all possible taking the drums off for a look is best.

The only work done in that area was the tyre changed a few weeks back. Hoping to get the drum off wednesday just trying to get a few experiences together. I think it only started this week but cant be sure. It's testimony to the reliability that I dont post very often but I do browse.....

What would happen if surface material of brake shoe would break off? Could it be in such position where it would amplify braking of that wheel?

That has been suggested at work. It has been known for the remnants of a bonded lining to double back on itself but in that case the wheel locked permanently. I suppose it depends on clearance what the effect is....

Cant get the drum off. hammered, banged, levered ,slackened handbrake, cant get a screwdriver into the square hole because its behind drive shaft flange, mr haynes plastic end stop doesn't exist.

I see you've got the dreaded worn lip on the drum, thus the drum won't come off over the shoes! It's a bit of a don't damage anything too much but keep wriggling it about and trying to rotate it as you gently lever it. Someone else might have a cunning plan or more experience in super difficult drums, but I've normally got there in the end!

I only got an hour on Wednesday. Will check on availability of shoes and springs before getting serious at the weekend. Dont want to break anything and not have parts available.... Any more input gratefully recieved...Neil

LOL, that's the thing, either working at times where bits are readily available, or, not having to use the car in a hurry! It's always the case when you work on the car for a dealine that something important is needed when no where is open to get it! Hope you get it sorted soon.
