Hi busy doing my front shocks and springs and came across a problem seems I need a special volvo tool 5862 to get the shock absorber cartridge out, Is there anything else i can use? and what can i use to put the new ones in I got of Dai because these seem to be smaller, Really need to get these done ASAP as just found out my next autotest is next sunday + I dont rly wanna have to use the fezza

Hi James,

In reality the special tool is just a "big spanner" and the insert retainers are just "nuts"

Special tool 5862 is 50mm across the flats - so if you can get an adjustable wrench with jaw openings of 50mm or greater - no problems (rare and expensive).

If worse comes to worse I have the tool which you are welcome to borrow - but as you say you'll need something smaller for Dais replacements. Try a local tool hire firm for an "industrial" 50mm ring or o/e spanner.

Adjustable swan necks will get those nuts off, not the right way to do it, but it worked for me and as long as your carefull it'll be fine.

Mole grips would be good too, again just be careful as they can shred bolts if not tightened correctly.

i've always used a vice; works perfect for me!

cheers for the the advice lads ended up trying hammer and chisel which didnt work, mole grips couldn't get a grip on the small lip, but got a massive pair of stillsens (not sure what real name is just what my neighbour called them) which managed to get the nut off

is there a proper way to put the speedo cable back in cause mines really tight and is just not going in even with lots of force and lots of swearin at it

did mine last sunday,get a plumbers heat gun,and spend about 3 minutes heating around the top,you will actually hear it clicking as the seal releases.
then use any large grips and it wont take to much force(im a plumber this works!)just be VERY carefull once youve undone it because the oil inside will be hot so take care to drain it somewhere safe!
good luck,and dont worry about any seals as your new unit is a sealed unit!

Don't use washing up liquid if you want it to come out again. Washing up liquid contains salt.

Use grease to help it slide in

I found that removing the rubber bushing/collar from the strut and pushing the speedo cable through before re-inserting works quite well.
No matter what swears I tried, I couldn't get it to go back in when the rubber was in the strut.

cheers lads i got in in really easy by using a dose of grease and using a stanley knife to taper the end of the plastic went in no bother then, 3 shocks down just the one to go now

I've done this once or twice, plumber's shifters do the job a treat, no significant damage. Bolt the strut back into the wheel and then stand on the back of it with the front flat on the ground, plenty of leverage and security. Do it on grass to protect the wheel.

Shifters only work one way, make sure you use them the way that they tighten up, pushing on the back of the tool only.
