right when i had my 340 i had to change a rear wheel bearing on it...... it was a nightmare 4 hours of battering the living crap out of it with hammers and slidehammers and i broke 2 sets of pullers on it and all i did was damage the bearing more and failed at separating the 2 parts..
i ended up changing the whole axle in less time
now i need to change one on my 360 and i dont have a spare axle with good bearings, or a volvo puller
so has anyone got any tips on how to do it with basic tools?
heat maybe?
i have a large hammer, a sturdy set of pullers and a mini blowtorch
will i manage with these items?
any info to make this easier would be much apreciated

you do need heat, the outer shell of the bearing is secured with loctite that won't come out unless you apply loads of heat!

what would be more concerning is the fact that you have a mk2 GLT, volvo doesn't stock those rear wheel bearings anymore..

isnt it the same as a 340 one?

nope; there are 3 types of rear wheel bearings:

1.4, 1.7, 1.6D chassisno <120999
2-litre versions chassisno <120999
all versions chassisno >121000

difference is shape of hup, setup of bearings (2 loose bearings with seperate dustcovers/ 1 double row bearing with seperate dustcovers/ 1 double row bearing with integrated dustcovers) etcetera.

could be you're extremely lucky and the correct bearing was supplied with the car

is there anyways of telling if the hup is different from the ouside (with out taking it apart completely)
as it looks exactly th same setup as my old 340.
and i just compared to 2 new wheel bearings i have and they look exactly the same

is the bearing i need the big single bearing with the seals attatched ie one unit?
the new bearings i have are just one large wide bearing with black rubbers seals on the end that arent removable
in the box there was the one bearing a circlip and a nut. is this correct?

Get the chassis number.

You could always change to later rear axle beam? Be aware though it'll have to be one from a 360 as the drum brakes are bigger.

Mac did a write up of wheel bearings but not sure if they were just for the front... sourcing them from SKF. Worth a search.

So it was the bearing, and not the diff?

I knew I should have trusted myself over that MOT station tit. I'm pretty certain that is the right bearing you have - but I can't remember whether I supplied the chassis number to get, or just the year and spec. Highland Auto Parts are pretty reliable.

well according to volvodspec and autosave in aberdeen i have the wrong bearing and i need the one they dont supply anymore
is there any chance the newer bearing would fit???
and yeah i thought it was wierd if it was the diff as it made more noise going right than left
even when welded but ach well i just need the right bearing now
or is there any chance i can convert my old mk3 axle i have lying around with the bigger 360 brakes but with the new bearings?
ie 1.4 340 rear axle, larger 360 drums shoes etc in theory giving my the same rear brake set up as it has now but with the newer single sealed unit wheel bearings???

i'm feel sorry for you mate;

unfortunatly, for the 3 versions i listed there are 3 different type of hubs; in other words, you can't swapout bearings ore use the bearing you currently have.

the 3rd universal (340/360) version bearing came with the MY86 modifications

maybe; it is worth a try to place a mk3 340 axle and if you incist on it place the 360 brakings on that; or simply use a mk3 360 axle, in my opinion it doesn't matter brake wise; except if you like using the e-brake

well i have a mk 3 340 axle sitting spare and the handbrake is a must as its my drifty car
but will my plan work of mk3 axle + mk2 glt brakes?

right is it possible to swap the brakes from glt rear brakes to 340 ones with out changing the handbrake cable?

problem solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the metal spacer bit that sits between the axle and the brake drum backing plate and houses the bearing can be removed
so my plan will work after all i will just have to swap the bearing housing and hub parts form the 340 axle over to the 360 axle then i will have my big brakes and 360 axle (better condition) but i will have 340 hub assemblies which means i will only ever need the newer sealed unit wheel bearings.
so its a win win awesome handbrake +new easily availiable bearings = AWESOME!!!!!!
