Steering rack and strut top mounts

My 1987 340 1.4 could do with a new steering rack as there is play in the end of the rack on the nearside. Are the racks all the same or is there more than one type?

I'm also getting a few creaks and groans from the top of the front suspension struts - does anyone know the price and availability of new rubber mounts and bearings?

Cheers,

Ian

Best off speaking to Dai about the strut top mounts/bearings. They're no longer available otherwise.

Thanks Steve,

Dai currently only supplies camber-adjustable top mountings although he is looking at getting original spec rubber ones reproduced in time. Given the low mileage I'll strip it down and have a look to see what it needs - a bit of grease hopefully......

I could still do with some info on the rack if anyone can help. Mine has a two bolt ' T ' fixing where it attaches to the steering damper. Are they all the same or is there more than one type?

Cheers,

Ian

I always thought they were the same, till I checked the parts catalogue. There are a few small differences - MkIII RHD versions differ depending whether it's a 340 or a 360, and on chassis number. As far as I can tell, the most important difference is that T-piece (called a "shaft" in the catalogue):

360, 340 RHD CH -251114
3292863

340 RHD CH 251115-
3210923

It may not be a big deal, perhaps the T-piece is interchangeable, but perhaps someone else can help with this?

The 1987 model year began with CH 241000 so if you get hold of an '87 on 340 rack you'll probably be OK ...

Cheers

Tom

I have a rack, one my parents driveway. I only took it off as I swaped it whilst my engine was out of Kar, from memory the track rods are good. Problem is it's on the island, so I'm guessing this isn't a huge amount of use?

Probably not Chris but thanks anyway :D

There's someone selling a rack on Ebay with a "25mm T fitting". Mine has a T fitting but I've no idea where the 25mm measurement is taken. I've looked at various application charts and I can only see two racks listed; up to 1982 with a spline pinion and 1982 with a T bar pinion. Looks like taking a flyer on the one on Ebay and hoping for the best.... :?
