temperature gauge

hi all, got myself a temperature gauge today from halfords for my volvo 340, got all the lights working on it but i cant get it to tell the temperature. on the gauge it has 3 pins, 1 with a S, 1 with a + and the other with nothing. if i run wires from the +on the batery to the plus on the gauge and the S to the temp sender the gauge goes all the way round to hot??? can any1 help?

Reading too high is normally the gauge not being earthed (which, I'm guessing is the wire you havn't fitted ;)) Do you have the instructions that came with the gauge?
