OK, the new cable is slightly different to the old ones, cos it's very slightly larger diameter square drive thingy.

You need to use all the other bits you got with it from Volvo. Put the large tubey thing into the bearing hub cab so that the square drive engages with it and the rest points into the hub and then slide the retaining ring over the top from the inside in order to hold it there. Remove the speedo cable and make sure there's a good length sticking out the end, and then replace it into the grommet. Make sure you can see the inner cable poking out the centro hole.

Then gently place the bearing hub cap back, ensuring the inner part of the tube engages into the square of the cable and push home. Job done, go for a drive with a working speedo.

Thanks for the explanation. What do you mean exactly by:
Remove the speedo cable and make sure there's a good length sticking out the end, and then replace it into the grommet. Make sure you can see the inner cable poking out the centro hole.
You mean at the end of the spedo or the end at the wheel?

i tried and tried and tried! could not get the cable to go in more than 1/2 way.

so i got the one i removed and cut 1/2 the rubber of it from the end and the thing slotted straight in, still enough friction, so will not just pop out etc.

then i did this to the one i was trying to get in and its working perfecT!!

thanks for the help guys.

Sorry Japper, the grommet is the hole you push the cable into at the wheel end, and its also the end you need to make sure there's a reasonable length sticking out.
