something behind the instrument box is screaming above 20mph, i thought this would be the speedo so put lots of oil into it, if anything it now makes a louder scream. might there be another cause for this?

The connector at the back of the instrument panel into which the speedo cable goes is screeching as it spins, try disconnecting the cable, there will be no more noise, a few drops of oil should sort it.

i've put quite a bit of oil into the back of the dial but it still screams, does the cable need oil too?

maybe it's the little guy that sits behind the dash? you know the one that switches all the lights on and stuff?
you have been feeding him..... right?
really sounds like a loose speedo, but oil should fix it

I have the same problem. For me it is the spedo cable, the locking clip has broken on one side so it's not holding the cable square. if you remove the cable the noise should stop.

Yes it would but at least you will know whether that is the fault or not.
I am still putting up with the noise. Will buy a new soon.
