How many of you have tried to pull the spedo cable out only to find it wont budge out of the hub? I have had no problems on some cars yet others would just not shift! This is the problem I had with Vickys car. The cable needed replacing so in the past I have tried to pull it out . NO WAY was it going to move. This week end I decided it was going to happen and it did.

Step 1 remove the cable off the spedo head.
Step 2 raise the front of the car
3 remove road wheel and bearing grease cap and spedo drive.
4 use a rod and push the cable out.


I could not belive how easy it went. The funny thing is I just did it without thinking. I had planed on spending half an hour tugging on it ( laugh if you wish )

So there you gop the easy way.

LOL, good tip Dai! I found it was a PITA to pull out of the hub, and ended up having to push the remaining part through, as the cable had actually broken within the hub and found that it was dead easy that way. Part of the problem appears to be the rubber sleeve it fits within, as it grips as it's pulled.

If you do use this method remember to remove the cable from the spedo head as the cable needs to push up the outer sleeve.

Well i did this when i modded my speedo and my grandad said they were bstards!!! And well i was too as i had in out and replaced within 5 mins!!
I couldnt believe it i was a real jammy git!!

so does the cable itself f*** up? the metal one inside? or the whole sleeve needs replacing.

Im asking because i have to replace it soon myself, i bought one of a guy for £3.

he has given me the whole cable with speedo head and sleeve. I thouhgt i would have to remove everything cable including sleeve and replace with the one he gave me!

this sounds like a nightmare! hope it isnt that big of a job, i have limited tools here in sheffield and limited resources.

Might have to save it till when i get back to london.

What usually happens with 300 cables is they become ungreased and up to 30mph the speedo needle tends to jump!!! Yeh replace the whole lot!!
You dont need much in the way of tools just time and a bit of spray grease may be a help!!!

That's the reason I replaced mine, partly speedo wobble and partly because I bent the outer casing pulling on it, bear in mind that the older cars (pre 1987? at a guess) will, like mine have a slightly different size inner drive part, so if you're taking one of another car then take the joint that goes into the wheel bearing cap too.

If the old cable is that hard to get out, how do you get the new one in?? Last time I had no trouble removing the old cable but had to shave plastic off the new cable to get it to go back into the hub, but then I am a rubbish mechanic. I will need to do this again soon, so would appreciate advice.

Spray grease will help it slide into the rubber in the hub.

The good old motto pleanty of lubrication should have it slide in nicely. Or if that fails ram it in!

I replaced mine for three reasons
Broken securing nut
Noise
And leaking grommet.

It is well worth replacing the whole lot. Its not that bad a job realy, normaly it just pulls out. using this method makes the difficult ones easy.

i got the old one out and new one in like 10minutes.

But its not working because i cnt the new one to slide into the HUB. I got it out no problem at all. just pulled it straight out, how the hell do you force all that back in?

i can get it half in, should i just use lots of lube or is there a special way?

What is happening is the rubber is not alighning with the hub. You will need to wiggle and push to get the cable to go in all the way, once it starts going in the hub itself you should be easy.

i tried pushing it in for ages! it just would not go in more than half way.

2mrw i will lube it more and try again, i dnt need to open the hub do i and pull it in or anything?

If you look at it from the back and look through the hole in the rubber you should see that there is a step as it enters the metal hub. What you will need to do is turn the rubber untill it lines up perfectly. If it will not line up you will have to push the cable to make it aline.

I have a problem with my speedo cable aswell. I bought a new one and pulled the old one out. That went easy. I've put the new one back, and it rotatest in its shell, I can see it rotating when I drive. But when I click the cable in the back of the speedo it does't gie any reading. When the cable is clicked into the speedo and I turn the cable at the bottom of it, the speedo moves. What am I doing wrong? O, I do have some parts left I got from Volvo. One looks like a washer with a serated(?) outer edge, the other thing is a T-shaped tube. A tube with a flattened end if you will.

The last two weeks I just guess how fast I'm going, and my tailpipe broke on the motorway.
