belt tensioner

Post by kalyyyyyy » 29 Aug 2009 07:31 pm

I checked and changed the distribution belt tensioner today and what i found is on the pictures attached. The bearing war worn and heated to much, it melted the belt a little. Has anyone had this problem?what are the consequinces for the belt? i will change it as soon as i have the money (a few weeks) but i ask you if there is a big chance that it would snap or not? the belt is almost new(8 months) and it's Lemforder.Besides the fact that the markings were worn off (the paint) the belt didn't seem to be affected .

It was a stupid thing , i know. The reason was lack of money and that the bearing didn't have any obvious play, only a sound of being worn and i didn't know that is so important (the car i had before was on chain). Anyway what was done was done , did you have a similar problem of heard of such?

well i do know from someone i know that the tensioner suddenly caught stuck on the highway and shortly after that he had a set of 8 bent valves + valve seat damage due to the belt that snapped.. however in that case it was just a coincidence.

the belt isn't that expensive and espescially not as expensive as repearing engine damage wich can occur after a snapped belt.. my advice is not to use the car untill you replace the belt with the tensioner

I know what happens if the belt snaps.I changed the belt tensioner,it's new and mounteed on the car today. The question is: the belt that is almost new (8 months and 5000 km) , could it have been so affected by the heat that it wouldn't last a couple of weeks until i'll change it? (sorry if i haven't been so precise, i'm not a native english speaker)

For peace of mind I would change the belt asap.

I asume you need to use the car untill you can afford to replace the belt. If that is the case I would think that you should get away with it not snapping.
