Having recently bought a 1989 340 1.7 i have been amazed at how difficult it is to buy two oil filters the same size!. The variation in size is crazy, does anybody know if it matters. The only one i have found that resembled the one the car came with was from halfords. I did get a wix filter from a local parts place that was half the size of the halfords one! they assured me that it was correct but i wasn't convinced. It wouldn't be a problem if halfords wasn't miles away ( i live in the middle of nowhere). Great car, but then you know that!!
try gsf - gsfcarparts.com - they sell genuine volvo filters for 360s, i presume they do for 340s too. apparently the genuine ones have some stop valve in to keep the oil in them overnight which helps with something yadda yadda..

As that Renault 1.7 Engine was offered in several cars where perhaps space was a premium the filter sizes do differ.
When i had my 480, same engine, i used to get lots of different sized filters as i bought different makes. They all worked fine, allthough the larger the filter size the bet filtering quality it has.
Personally i now just go to the big volvo shows and buy Volvo oil filters by the tray, as i prefer to use Genuine Oil Filters. The costs per tray are quite nice.
