When the light comes on , on the fuel guage to show fuel is getting low how many miles roughly have I got before running out of petrol completely ?
(its a 1.4 and needs a service so fuel ecomony is'nt that great )
Secondly some point in the future I may buy a second 340/360 when my wife learns to drive . If I go for a larger engine than the frankly weedy 1.4 what sort of MPG can I expect, bearing in mind I tend to drive the present car quite hard ( to keep up with everyone else). I quite fancy a 2 litre.

With 360GL you can get even 50MPG, if it is ok, but it is really hard to find one that is so ok, carburettor is usually worn and it will not work too well. My car was drinking 14litres per 100km last time, now carb is in a box and fuel injection is under hood.
If you like to go for 2litre, then I suggest to get GLT, get one without catalytic converter, it has better mileage as far as I know.
There is however 1.7 litre to consider, but I don't have too much experience from it.
To make 340/360 to run like Ford Focus with 1.8 Zetec it will require some modding, though
My fuel gauge does not go to empty position even fuel runs out, light is not lit ever and when needle goes near 2nd white mark from left, it will run out of fuel, annoying but I have not found reason for this.

If you have a Volvo 300 Owner's Manual, on the very last page (the inside of the back cover), there is a fuel consumption table...
(no idea how accurate it truly is)
I guess you have the 1.4 manual 340, in which case...
5-speed
Urban Cycle: 31.4 mpg
90Kph (56mph): 49.6 mpg
120 kph (75mph): 36.7 mpg
4-speed
Urban Cycle: 32.1 mpg
90Kph (56mph): 47.1 mpg
120 kph (75mph): 34.9 mpg

When the light came on in mine when it had the 1.4 engine in it, I ran the car for about another 20 miles, but that was as brave as I got. If you realy need to know, get a can of petrol, chuck it in the boot, run it untill the light comes on , re set the trip and drive untill you run out!

the 1.7 and 2l carb engines are actually MORE economical on a run than the 1.4, and i'd say about the same overall.
the light should come on with about 5l to spare - i managed 40 miles with it on before but then gave in and got some fuel..

You're usually OK for another 30 or so miles with the warning light on. If the light comes on less than, say, 7 seconds after you turn the ignition, it's getting uber low and ya need to fill her up!

The best economy i've got was on a trip up to the gold coast, travelled just over 600k's all up, and that with some city driving in there as well. That was with a 5spd B19e, and we were lightly loaded up(3ppl and 2 small bags of clothing). I think the capacity is 55 litres off memory which gives 9.1L/100k's? Would have gone on if i had a jerry with me.

try not to drive to long with the low level light on coz you risk sucking all sorts of crap and sediment form the bottom of the tank that may block your fuel line and may even get into the carb

Yeah, and it's under Halfords fuel filter catalog too, but i seem to remember a mechanic mate put it on on the first service I had done (before I'd get me hands dirty

) sure it didn't have it when I got it.

There should be one in the tank on the end of the pick up pipe as well as a mesh filter in the carb. This is cleanable and you can access it by undoing the 19mm (?) hex plug near where the fuel pipe enters and pulling out the little placcy widget. A smear of thread lock (not the permanent stuff!) on the plug is a good idea - if it shakes out while driving the petrol goes everywhere... (voice of experience!)
