Turbo Conversions....

Post by Lewis » 16 May 2005 11:39 am

My first post, how exciting!
I was wondering has anybody successfullly converted the B14 volvo block to Renault 5 Gt Turbo or Renault 5 Gordini Turbo cylinder head ?
Or gone EFI with mapped ignition as well?
Or do most of you volvo lads increase engine capacity by fitting the 1721cc or 2 litre engine?

i believe the gtt engine wont fit in the engine bay (something about a heater box), so most people just go for a different engine. if you've got a 360 then its dead easy to convert to a b230 and stick a turbo/16v head on it.. thats 200bhp straight off, without aditional tweaking.

aside from that, what about the 16v renault 1.8 engine? 160odd bhp, pre-turbo, means it could be tuned quite a lot..

The main problem is that a stock GTT engine has around the same power as a stock GLT, and (probably...I've not checked) less torque. Obviously mods are cheap, but you're still never going to set the world on fire with it. The 1.4 was a bit small for such a heavy car - tuning the bottom of the range engine never makes too much sense. Having said that, it's something someone *needs* to do, so don't let me stop you - just don't expect to end up with the fastest 300.

I do seem to remeber volvo building some 1.4 turbo rally cars but I don't think they really took off. Anyone know any more?

They did indeed - twas enlarged to 1.7 first though. Bit radical maybe...

I have few articles in finnish about those rally cross cars. They did won the European championship in rally cross (WRC's predecessor) with those in the late 70's. Those cars were equipped with engine based on 1.4 Renault block bored to 1.7 and turbocharged. About ~300hp and it did 0-100km/h in 3.2s with proper gear ratios. So it was a quick car. :P Front discs were updated but it had the stock rear drums.

Later also rally cross cars with Volvo engine were built. There were also few of those in Finland and raced in local rally cross class. I have an article about one. It had a four wheel drive (Titanium rear differential made by ZF, front differential is from BMW 320), engine based on B23 block bored to ~2.9l, titanium con rods, 16V R-Sport head and it produced 380hp@6500-8000rpm N/A but there are also remarks about turbo added later and then it would have produced 580hp. Vented discs and a five speed Getrag transmission. 0-100km/h 3.8s N/A and 7.6s 0-178km/h. Sounds like fun. 8)
