340 DL B14 Clutch problems

Post by WaxFraq » 28 Oct 2011 08:10 pm

Hi!
Finaly I found a forum for my 340...! Needed that today.. :(
I got a trickey problem that I really hope someone else have solved before me...in a easy way..
It all started with total loss of clutch. Finaly managed to "jump" all my way home for some inspection...sadley the wire was OK....that would be easy to fix. To easy..!

Pulled of the rubber bellow for the release fork, and found soon out that the "F-ing" ball pin was broken. I removed the bolt that was left in the clutch housing and discovered that there was no thread for the ball pin, there was a "F-ing" nut on the inside aswell as on the outside. What was Volvo/Renault thinking back in the day????

So now for my question. What to do?? The car is useless as it is. It has "only" 210 000 on the odometer, and it does what it suppose to do..usually..

My plan is to cut(!) an "inspection hatch" in the clutch housing. Just beneeth the ball pin entering. Probably not a good Idea, but what the "F" am I suppused to do?

Thank's for a great forum, and I'm terrible sorry for my bad english...I'm from Norway..

Yeah, I've seen the Haynes...but it seems like such amount of work just for that bolt...

Less work than grinding! Prop off is easy on these

I think sadly you have to pull the bellhousing off. Depending on clearance, you might just be able to winkle the bellhousing past the exhaust, otherwise you'll have to take that off too. Its not all that much work, but yeah I know its a PITA for a tiny thing. I once had to rethread the long brake line that goes between the front and back brakes. Because it was pushed in up past the handbrake cables, and the car was a 360, we had to take the whole gearbox out. And of course, it was an MOT failure so we had to do it in a real hurry......real PITA. Pete Farrell helped me with that one.....in the p*ssing rain, how typical!

Anyway, I think that even if you do manage to grind a 'window' you'll have trouble releasing the clip and getting the bolt out and the new one clipped in properly TBH.

Hi guys!!
I just gotta say thank you for persuading me to rip it apart..! It was not to much work...and got my self a little laugh when all of the parts where laying around the car.
Next time... ...I know how to deal with that one..! And it was kind of instructive to!! Had to weld a new ball pin, and it worked just fine!

Now I have to replace both of the front wheel bearings..And that sucks a little, because the breake callipers are both a bit stuck..they don't glide as they should...
So it's back to the garage I suppose...
