360gls fuel problems
360gls fuel problems
hi,
i'm new here, so cheers everyone! just bought 360 gls 2.0 carb '85 (car wasn't used since 2001) and have few problems, which can't find in the forum.
1) just filled 20l of gasoline, and fuel light still flickering?
2) sometimes going full throttle and car chokes and runs out, sometimes not. when i have to pull out choke and run starter, although car is hot. is it problem in carb or fuel pump?
3) where is the noise from drive shaft or cluch, also not always? is it genuine problem?

Re: 360gls fuel problems
Hi, and welcome
My 83 GLS has problems with the fuel guage being stuck and reading 1/3 of a tank all the time. Also it once had all the symptoms of 'running out of petrol' despite the tank being about 1/3 full (this happened during fairly brisk driving on twisty roads). It was left for 30 minutes and it started and ran perfectly after that. The problem has not happened again as I now run with a full tank all the time, not a problem as it's not used very much at the moment!
My car was also off the road for a long time (since about 2000 I think) and is very low mileage (19,000).
I suspect there my be something blocking the fuel line between the two halves of the saddle tank, or blocking the fuel pickup in the tank. This may be connected with the sender unit in the tank not working (bit fallen off?)
I have not sorted it out yet as I have too many projects on the go and the car runs perfectly as long as the tank is above 1/2.
I will be looking at it in the summer before the car goes back on the road again.
I'm not sure if this helps but it might be the same problem?
What is the noise like with the clutch?

Re: 360gls fuel problems
My '84 GLS had similar issues, having been off the road for around 15 years before I bought it.
I replaced the fuel pump as the original was tired, and stripped and cleaned the carb seeing as it was full of solidified fuel. That sorted things.
Ditto on what's the noise!

Re: 360gls fuel problems
It's difficult to describe that noise, it strenghten when throttle body opens... first though what engine mounts tore, but it's ok. and i thought the same, what carb needs to clean.. maybe where is instruction manual, how to clean it? and where is fuel pump? in the tank? always thought, that carbs doesn't have serious fuel pumps..

Re: 360gls fuel problems
I've just dismantled a 360 for spares and there was no fuel pump under the tank, these are only fitted on the injection models so the only pump is by the engine.

Re: 360gls fuel problems
so in my case, here should be problem with carb. or maybe you can describe, how fuel flows from the tank, is there possibility to clog gasoline system with trash from the tank, which sometimes causes fuel cut?
Re: 360gls fuel problems
The fuel pump is mechanical and is mounted on the engine block on the inlet side. It draws fuel from the tank via a lever which contacts the camshaft when the engine is turning and depresses a rubber diaphram, creates suction and draws in fuel from the tank.
Whip it off, just the fuel hoses and two (13mm iirc) bolts that hold the housing to the engine. Depress the lever and see how it feels. There should be quite a lot of resistance present. You will feel it if it is worn. It may have a split diaphragm.
Try sticking a little hose into a resevoir of fuel and see how far it fires across the room.
I'd replace it anyway, for around £20. Renew the gasket and spacer too, mine cracked in half when I removed the pump.
As for the carb, I found an expolded schematic of it via some Google searching. I have it saved on my other computer, let me know if you need it.
Liam.
