340 prop shaft and engine capabilitys

Post by b10opc » 19 Nov 2011 10:11 pm

hi
i have been scouring this forum for months now and finally actually decided to speak up.

i was looking for a volvo for about a year and finally found one in my buget when i had money.

i have bought a 1984 1.4 340 dl in beige (lol)

since buying it ive been told by people that know me that my driving will surely kill the prop on a 340 (they actually said if i could find enough id go through one a week) so now im worried, how weak are they and if they are how hard are they to get/replace with something stronger.

also im wanting to change the engine for something with abit more poke and was looking at t5 or nissan sr20det if anyone has any project theads or completed volvos near dudley, walsall way get in touch for a meet so i can see the ins and outs

Firstly, pictures. Post them. Beige is an awesome colour.

Secondly, with the 1.4 you'll probably be fine on the prop. The problem often starts with engine mounts being knackered. Moving engine = broken prop.

There's no solution yet other than getting something fabbed up for several million pounds. They are very very easy to swap over however, just 2 bolts.

lovely colour thinking of painting mine like that not sure

anyway prop wise on a 1.4 with good engine alligment it will be fine my first 340 1.4 got stupid amounts of abuse daily
they only fail when youve either got shagged engine mounts or running it think over 150lbft ISH throught them with sticky tyres

i am in talk with a company about bolt on uprated props for 340s im just short on cash to get a prototype made so hopefully soon

A 4 door mk2, in beige! thats full of win! :D As for the prop, get some polybushed mounts, and get it all aligned, and you should be fine. The 1.4 hasnt got enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding, so you should be fine :) Thomas............

Ahhh thank you more pictures will come tomorrow its my first day off since i had it so il got work to dp tomorrow

And just took my mate out for a spin not fucking about cause of the dry weather and and as i get home theres little or no drive and a burning rubber smell. I checked the prop and thats spinning fine all the way to the box so aparently it could be clutch. :(

Burning rubber won't be clutch. Clutch smells of clutch.

Sounds like a prop, in which case I'm guessing your engine or gearbox mounts need some love :(
