Help identifying parts needed please :D

Post by Attack2001 » 27 Sep 2012 11:46 pm

Hi all, right im doing the conversion on mine from 340 to 360. I wont be using a redblock however  , so from the front of the bell housing forward i have covered. What i need to know is what i need to put a complete torque tube into my 340? I've been told to use the 340's rear gearbox mount, i understand the gear selector mechanism is all attached to the torquetube and should fit straight up into the whole already in my shell, what else am i going to be needing, help please? :D

Thanks, Thomas...................

Thats it really, handbrake cables/mechanism can stay 340 as youre not using a saddle tank
Wouldnt recommend just the rear support of the 340,in that configuration engine torque can destroy the diff housing with the rest of the 360 bits

Dunno how things fit with your tank but I'd say use the 360 diff mounts

To fit the 360 diff mountings you need the 360 diff cross member and the threaded holes in the chassis. Don't know if the 340 has these. Find the threaded holes in the side of the diff and trace upwards, 2 holes on each side (in the chassis rail).

You also need the 360 right angle brackets (sided) and bushes, but its going to be hard to get good brackets, they are aluminum with steel cased bushes and rot badly. But you could make your own from steel using a freely available bush. Make sure you use a fail safe bush, and paint where steel joins aluminium.

I was considering running the 360 rear gearbox mount too. Even if the holes aren't there, i can fabricate a plate to weld on with captive nuts so its all good :D

If i were to use 360 front engine mounts also, I believe they mount on top of the chassis rails on either side of the engine, and the engine hangs down off them? How hard is it to fit those to a 340 then, i've been told that was a mission by someone else, so i wanted to steer clear of it, however if it can be done relatively easyily then maybe i should, and mount the whole set-up using all 360 parts? Are the 360 engine mounts still available at all?

Thanks, Thomas.................

Yeah the engine hangs off the 360 mounts, tbh it would be easy to make your own and use some hockey pucks :) as 360 engine mounts seem to be like rocking horse shit

They just bolt into the chassis legs, but I don't know if the holes+threads are there. Probably not too difficult to sort.

If you are putting a turbo engine in you might have to make up something anyway as the 360 engine mount get in the way of the oil return. The 700/900 have sit on mounts that might fit. I need to do some work on that anyway. I'm hoping to use the unmodified 940 engine side bar with a modified 360 mount.

You will need to drill the mounting holes for the 360 mounts in the 340 chassis legs dude.
Then captive nuts (impossible), riv-nuts or a long arm are needed.

As for the turbo oil return, thats simple. Iirc, i used the 940 mount as it gives a bit more space (use the smallest anyway lol). Then you need a flexible pipe fornthe return. Mine was a copper and silicone hash job, but worked. A flexible braided steel pipe is the way to go imo.

Yup putting those 360 mounts on is what im scared of  I was told to use the 340 ones as it much easier and simpler, but i suppose i need to do it right to make sure its done properly. I was thinking of cutting a section out the top of the chassis rail, and welding in a plate with the captive nuts on the bottom. Doing the same at the rear for the gearbox mount. I think this would work and would make it a lot stronger than putting captive nuts in the standard metal :)

I'm not using a 940 turbo engine ;) so oil returns and the like are not such a problem as of yet :D

I meant that for Ride_on lol. CBA to quote when on my phone!

Welding in a new plat with captive nuts does sound like a good idea. As you know, it's only the top of the leg that will require modifying. Nice and thick steel too, so you can blitz it with the MIG. :D

I have some of your stuff sorted out mate. Steering wheel, torque tube, gearbox/diff mount (was in decent enough condtion iirc) will check when I'm next over the garage. Either today or tomorrow. Bell housing, clutch kit, gearbox - torque tube clamp. What else is there?

The front engine mounts? Just the bit that bolts to the chassis, although if you have a knackered 360 engine mount that would be nice too as im going to need to make some new ones so i'l be able to use it as a copy :)

Are all the gearlinkages etc attached to the torquetube?

Cant think of anything else :D

Ah, gear linkage. Nope, that's on its own and is also in your pile. Knew I forgot something.

Will rake through what mounts etc I have and get back to you mate. :340: / :360:
