340 1,7 - Coolant leakage, water pump?

Post by siggi » 31 Aug 2005 10:21 pm

My 340 1,7l 1986 is leaking coolant pretty heavily. I have located it to come from a drain hole in the bottom of the water pump. I can't hear any special noise from the pump so I think the bearing is OK.

Do you think I have to replace the whole pump with a new one or could it be just a gasket or something?

Is it easy to replace the water pump? Something to be aware of?

If its the drain hole from the bottom of the pump itself, the seal on the bearing is shot and the whole pump needs replaced. Make sure though that its the hole its coming from and not the gasket behind it dripping down.

Replacing is fairly easy, just make sure you CAREFULLY remove ALL traces of the old gaskets before refitting. Don't use any sealant or anything, provided the flange has no bits of old gasket on it and is flat and shiny it'll all go back together a treat.
