RENIX Timing

Post by cryan » 07 Dec 2005 05:22 pm

Is there a, "quick fix," to sort out the timing on a RENIX system. I know that you can't adjust the distributor. but timing is well out. I have cleaned the flywheel pick-up and the conections, the distributor cap and rotor are new(3months) and we checked the leads for good continuity. the engine runs on when stopped and I kind of suspect the idle solenoid on the webber carb but that doesn't really explain the timing fault. any ideas?

Car is 1987 340 DL with a B14.4E engine 1397cc. :?:

if the timing is well out then you need a new Renix, but why do you think it is? Is the only symptom the car running on after switched off? If so that is a carb fault, the idle solenoid possibly, but also a tuning issue, too rich an idle mixture can cause running on, as can too high an idle speed. Carbon build up in the head can do it too.

A list of the problems you're having would give us info to perhaps help you out.

Ahh, OK, All these point to carby faults, IMO its time to get the carb tuned using a gas analyser and to make sure the idle speed is OK. If you still can't get the car to idle smoothly, or you can't get the carb tuned within spec then you need to start looking for air leaks, favourites are round the baseplate and on a 1.4, normally mean either the carb is loose on the mounting bolts or the gaskets are cracked.

See the post, "1.4 340 Engine running shakey READ ME FIRST FFS" for more details on the carb stuff.
