85 360, clutch slipping.

Post by dalahare » 21 Mar 2006 01:57 pm

I've got a '85 360 glt with the 2.0l petrol motor, sometimes under hard accalaration or when driving a bit silly the clutch will slip, trying a burnout is out of the question as the tyres won't break traction, clutch slips, i did a quick search and found that a few people were recomending removing the motor to get at the clutch, but i think that was on a 340, is that what needs to be done on my car too? what are the options for heavier duty aftermarket clutches, as i'm entertaining the idea of doing some drift days at a track nearby when i get the suspension sorted.

Thanks.

2 options for clutch replacement on a 360, cos of the torque tube, you can't just disconnect the propshaft like you can on a 340.

So either its engine out, or gearbox and rear diff out. Neither is a particularly pleasant or easy operation. I have done both and found that although engine out is a longer procedure it was slightly easier, although I'm better at doing these things now than I was when I took the gearbox out.

Sorry for the ramble, but yes, its either an engine or gearbox out jobbie. If you don't have an engine lift then the decision is made for you and its gearbox out. Get a Haynes though, cos its pretty good for this.

I once tried to take the gearbox and diff off to allow me to drop the torque tube so I could get amongst the plate at the bottom of the gear lever with a welder.

The driveshafts unbolt from the final drive easily, then it's 2 bolts to undo the gearbox mounts with a trolley jack supporting the 'box, unclip the gear selector rod and... well, it was all going to plan until I tried to undo the bolts holding the torque tube to the front of the gearbox! They're those pesky 'allen key' bolts and they were just having none of it!

I even undid the front of the torque tube and tried to slide the whole lot rearwards and off the car, but the back of the gearbox hit the solid axle thing before the driveshaft was clear at the front. D'oh!

Ended up taking the whole gear lever apart from inside the car and welding what I could reach from through the hole. Probably should have done that in the first place!

So anyway, my advice is that if you're going for the gearbox-out route, try the hex-key bolts on the front of the gearbox first, and make sure they will undo!

Good luck!
