1.7 Carb base plumbing

Post by Chris_C » 04 Aug 2006 11:38 pm

Anyone know on which cars this is supposed to be on? Fake doesn't have it installed, and I reckon it would solve two of my problems, firstly taking ages to get off choke, and secondly the heat soak type problems I have on a warm (very... 20ish minutes) start.

Background, I have the replacement weber, that looks like it has the pipe attachments, but no house stuff. Looking at VADIS, it looks as though 2 hoses come from the head, one from a T-piece, anyone have some good photos I can have a look at? I'm going to try the dealers for the hoses when I get a free minute, and have a go at plumbing it in, just not convinced I know where it's going

Its the older 1.7s. The newer ones all had electric heaters in the base, but I don't believe that's your main problem Chris. Your problem IMO is that the carb doesn't have a fuel cut off valve, so it sucks a whole load of fuel into the idle jets and floods itself when you turn it off. We've also got to check the float height again now I got specs of a sort from Webcon.

I dunno why it doesn't have them or whether its possible to put one in by drilling/tapping a particular spot on the casting but its a weird one.

Curiously, Nessy has started to be awkward to start after say 30 minutes. Up to about 10 mins is fine (no trouble at the petrol station), but it floods itself if left longer (requires WOT to start, and blows black when it does). Longer still and it's no bother. I've not yet got the numbers dialled in better than that. She's a great starter apart from this....random...

I agree with Andy, I think this is a set-up problem. Have you compared jet specs with Mick's Weber?

cheers

No, hadn't thought of checking Micks. As for 1.4's, on hot summer days, they won't start without half a foot off accel, none I've tried do anyway.

Interesting. I wondered whether it was just getting worse with time, but it is always on hot days. Maybe I need to rig up that fully siiic cold air intake I've been debating - it seems lifeless on hot days.

cheers

You put that CAI and RAI thing and your Volvo will fly, it is like 100hp more :D :D

It did help with injection too to get cold air, specially on hot day, but my intake pipe did go near radiator so air got hot when sitting in traffic.

My car was idling for a moment day before yesterday and when I opened hood it was like a sauna in there, fan was moving really hot air, certainly that kind of heat will be causing trouble.

Intake air temps did drop quite fast when moving and using loud pedal, but if your carbs take air from engine bay, it clearly is causing some power loss, easily 10hp.

Chris the changeover from plumbed to heated base i believe was around 1988-89 as my gransdads saloon 88 has it and the blueline doesnt 89 although its not just two pipes!!!! Trust me i looked at converting it. Loads of extra pipes including the expansion tank one!!!!
