Replacement diff. cover plates

Post by mac » 01 Dec 2006 01:11 pm

As Chris mentioned in the gasket thread he has been making progress with replacement cover plates.

He is looking at the possibility of alloy castings rather than tin and to help out I have been trying a little 'prototyping'.

Results so far:-

I've dispensed with the long breather pipe and am trying a system of baffles on the inner face.

Chris is investigating with his foundry contact about producing bare castings and we hope to do any machining and drilling 'in house'.

I'm sure Chris will appreciate any comments and suggestions from the forum. A lot is going to depend on costs and how many could be sold.

Mac.

Mac's done all the making so far, I'm just using some contacts. I think the foundry are going to be keen, and prices look good too tbh, although will go up a tad with the machining required. Machining would be useful if it can be done in house, and tbh, it is possible for me to do this, as I have access to a decent shop, but if anyone has the tools and skills to skim, drill and tap, it might work better.

How many peeps would be keen, pricing will very much depend on run size.

I just thought, wouldn't the 'deeper' centre section make this more difficult to fit onto the car? As you'd only be able to get to the cover plate bolts from certain angles.

Deeper ??

Remember it's fitted with inhex screws (allen key) - Bolt headed screws would indeed be harder if using a spanner, but OE fit is inhex anyway.

A lot of work must have gone into that.

I would consider one - cost dependant
