Sure there is, there is idle speed adjustment screw in carb (in 360 that is in valve cover side of carb, near that throttle pulley, but in carb body, it limits how much throttle plate is left open when no throttle is pressed), but you should first check possible air leaks and make sure you have good and clean air filter installed, also spark plugs and spark plug leads and also distributor cap should be in good condition (if you don't know how old these items are, replace, that is general rule of thumb).A M R wrote:hmm thats the least of my worries atm. if it aint broke dont fix it.
another annoying thing is that the car idles at around 1k with a faint whiff of petrol at times. is there a way to turn the idle down/make it run leaner?
Area between throttle butterfly to intake valve should be completely air tight or there is going to be odd things happening.
Ah, my car was same, when I replaced fuel filter it started to run really rich, that is how bad it wasA M R wrote:hmm i see. when i first got the car, i had a look around under the bonnet. i swear the fuel filter is the same from factory

I needed to replace also fuel lines too, those looked bit wet and in reality there were leaking a lot, if those are that fabric covered then you need to replace those too, not expensive, but bit lot of not so fun work, however it gives better fuel economy and keeps car from getting fire, which is generally thought to be as a good thing

Oh and Jani and Pettaw are both right, fix the thing properly. Those plates are a couple of quid from Volvo, and I might be wrong, but they looked to be better quality than they would have been new and more rust resistant. Some 'wire' will not hold it as rigid and will probably eventually wear through with movement.

He has GLT?
Well, then there sure is no carb, but there is aux air valve bolted to valve cover, it can be bit jammed, remove it and clean well, one that I had required gentle tap now and then to get it go to normal idle, weak spring or something.
Then there is big black knob near throttle plate (below it actually), that controls how much air goes from breather to intake manifold, also this adjusts idle speed, but before adjusting this, you should remove and clean flame trap and oil separator that is that black box near starter motor where is this black hose connected to also.
Also some times you would like to adjust aux air valve, there is that tiny nut on body of valve loosen it a bit and then you can adjust it to different position.
Injection models are easier, not so much to cause problems as in carbs, for example air leaks are pretty much non issue, only thing those do is cause high idle speed, but not too much of else, anyway to make car work well you should make sure these are ok too.
Oh yes, throttle plate has certain clearance where it should be adjusted, can't remember now how much it was and my Haynes book seem to be somewhere where I left it which I can't remember, so can't check it either. But don't adjust idle speed by adjusting throttle plate in injection model.
