Starter motor / distributor cap

Post by Duvel78 » 04 Nov 2004 12:48 am

Message from Patricia:
I had an AC Delco starter motor fitted to my Volvo 340 yesterday as the
previous one burnt out. (Apparently Lucas are unobtainable now due to the takeover.)

It grates very badly when the key is turned and, although it starts the
engine OK , it sounds like bare metal thrashing together while doing so. The garage tell me this is usual for Delco starter motors and it will wear off!!? Can I really believe this or should I insist they change it? I have not paid for this yet! We had no problems with the original Lucas.

Also, the distributor cap has been replaced again! The last one was in
March this year and previous to that it has had four (usually with a replacement rotor arm) since the beginning of 2000. The guy in the pick-up truck said it was generic of Volvo's. Is this also true?

With grateful thanks for any help and advice.

Can`t comment on the starter, though I admit it sounds suspect.

I have had to replace dis. caps on a regular basis before - I keep one in the car in the "likely to need that" spares box.

The Renault engines are indeed famous for dizzy cap faults...although I thought it was cracking them, rather than burning them out?!

I guess if she has a warranty on the starter she can see how it goes...
That sort of sound is normal for a stuck 'spindle', but not if its starting the car OK...hmm...

cheers
