Carb Problem.

Post by kaos » 01 Sep 2007 12:55 pm

so as ive mentioned a few times arround the forum ive got crappy carb problems

bassically the mixture keeps increasing so its putting out 8%CO with is 6 above the 2% it should be. this means my 31.2MPG keeps dropping down to arround 25MPG. it means i constantly have to play with the carb screw some times im lucky and have the chance to do it on the emmission tester sometimes i dont and have to do it by turning it down untill the engine starts choking and then adjust back till it isnt. this at l;east gets my fuel consumption back.

Anyone got any ideas as to how to stop the mixture screw moving, or even sorting the problem out once and for all?

1.4, 1.7 or 2.0? The mixture screws all work slightly differently ;)

There's a spring on the mixture screw to help keep a bit of tension on it and stop it wiggling about. You'll have to take the screw out completely to see it, so be sure to remember the position of it (I do this by winding in gently and count turns out) before you take it out unless you've got access to a gas analyser easily ;)

Yup just check the spring's there at all ;) If provides no other function other than to stiffen up the adjuster screw a touch so it stops it drifting, so its possible someone removed or lost it.

appologies for the double post.

i have now found the mixture screw! it was wedged right at the bottom of the engine between the the sump and another component near the starter motor/might have been the starter motor.

now to clean it off.

and to answer the early question spring condition is good. and the screw and needle is in good condition. doesnt look threaded either.

Awesome, glad you found it! Can't help about the screw though, it's a long time ago I played with the 1.4 carb, even if I did have one for 6 years!

aye it is good. well ive re instaled it and been up the garage. since that post. Running lean now at about 0.16CO%

and it wont budge from down there. so my mpg should stay good for sure. the mixture screw since putting it back on is very tight and hard to adjust with a screwdriver. so im assuming its now on correctly etc.
