Replacing diff access plate gasket

Post by griffo20022 » 18 Sep 2007 11:56 am

Hey guys well my access plate gasket defo needs replacing because it's leaking a fair bit and don't wanna keep using the car knowing it is leaking. Had a quick blink under the car and noticed the fuel tank seems to be in an annoying place if you wanna get to the diff.

From the looks of things i reckon it'd still be easy enough to do the gasket with the fuel tank in place but if push comes to shove is it a hard job to take the fuel tank off?

I haven't got me a haynes manual yet (but in the process of acquiring one) but could someone give me a few pointers on doing the job, a quick guide sort of thing. changing the gasket seems easy enough but jobs such as refilling the oil in the diff again etc im not too sure of.

Must say though I do really love this car :)

Thanks guys

Did this job a while ago on my 360... be careful when tightening the end plate bolts, they only need to be tightened to 9nm.. ie. not alot, else you risk bending the end plate!

However, I found mine needing tightening up after a bit from it assumingly compressing the gasket.. and it now STILL leaks (despite the cover being straight and uncorroded.. so when I next do the job it will be new gasket and sealant for a belt and braces approach

You may want to get hold of a pair of new washers for both the drain/filler plugs. The drain/filler plugs are also torqued.. can't remember the exact torque but its around 35nm. You should be able to fill the diff quite easily using a bottle with a nozzle, but ensure the car is level - on a lowered car you probably wont get under it without having it up on 4 axle stands

Dunno about the 340 as the 360 has a different fuel tank location, but you'll find the axle gets in the way more than the tank I'd imagine, so removing the fuel tank wouldn't be much gain.

I've not done it a 340 with the tank in place yet. On the 340 the tank is onlyheld in with 4 bolts and the fuel lines will need disconnecting if it is in the way.

Privided everything is clean it should seal fine

The Kits that mac has made are perfect for the job so well worth getting a kit. I went complete with bolts to make the job A1

Yer well i've PM'd Mac regards to getting some gaskets so just awaiting on a reply. Does he supply bolts n stuff as part of a kit too? Oooo will probs do what you have done aswell swede and go for the whole 9 yards no point being an arthur job when it's planned for the transmission being put under strain anyway if the car goes drifting.

I did notice the tank was only held on with 4 bolts and the wiring and pipes disconnect easy enough yer? :) sound :)

Just out of curiosity, i'm not quite liking the idea of driving the car about no knowing how much oil is in the diff with it leaking out etc, is it safe driving at low speeds. I don't NEED to drive it for the likes of work n stuff which is a good thing so if not then I will probs just not drive it until it's done or if I desperately need to use it.

He supplies the gasket, two sealing washers for the drain and filler/level plugs, 10 x A2 stainless steel M8x12 inhex capscrews with matching washers and comprehensive instructions for about a tenner all in inc. PP. Suffice to say he's not really making any money out of this!
