1.8 16v conversion issues

Post by sps » 27 Sep 2007 04:38 pm

hi

Just a quick few questions
I have the 1.4 DL 1983

1) will the bellhousing fit over onto the 1.8 flywheel ect? what do i need to do this from each car?

2) it does not look like the sumps will match up - i have heard that it was a straight swap - can someone enlighten me please

3) Engine mounts - does the 1.8 line up with the existing mounts if not what needs to be made up or ??

Any help appriciated as got the engine ready to put in this weekend

Thanks

S

Hey mate I havent actually done the conversion myself but my car does have the conversion ok, to what I know of...

If the 1.4 bellhousing is the same as the 1.7 then yes it will fit. My car is a 1.7 and has all of the original volvo drivetrain and the 16v engine has bolted straight up no problem.

I don't think the 16v sump does fit. Mine has the 1.7 sump on it which seems to have bolted straight on. Again if the 1.7 sump is the same as the 1.7 your sorted.

No the engine mount doesnt line up, being as the 16v lump was original in a transverse setup. On my engine the mount which originally bolted the engine to the drivers side of the renault clio has been cut off. The engine mount bracket off the 1.7 does bolt straight into the side of the 16v engine though so again providing the 1.4 mount brackets the same as the 1.7 you'll be sorted again :)

Hope this helps.

Yeah you'll need a load of 1.7 bits... the 1.4 block is completely different

Good job i found that out, need to change my search for a car slightly then :)

Anyone know what other parts (if any) are needed from a 1.7 apart from the sump and engine mounts?

The subframe and mounting points are the same.

You will need 1.7 bellhousing
probably the clutch cable (could be the same)
sump with mounting bracket
pass side engine mounting bracket
best to also use the 1.7 alternator bracket as well.

That should be about it
