turbo oil pump

Post by smithy » 14 Aug 2007 01:36 pm

I am fitting a 740 turbo engine my 360. I have hit a small snag the oil pump gears on the turbo engine are longer to give a greater flow. If i put the 360 top on the pump the sunp won't fit. If anyone has come across this and can help it would be greatly appreciated. thanks :?:

Everyone I know who's done this has just swapped the complete 360 pump in and not had oil pressure issues. I've not had them both in pieces to look, so I hadn't considered there may be internal differences stopping you building a 'hybrid'.

You're fine with the 360 pump, Makkiver is aiming for at least 400hp I think and he's using the stock 360 pump so at least below those levels you shouldn't have any issues. 8)

Thank a lot for that. Iam going to take the chance. The engine swap is going to start this weekend. I made up a right hand engine mount bracket using a rh 240 rubber mount. I am going to fit a standard skyline intercooler. It looks small compared to the 740 intercoolers. but there isn't much room so it should be ok considering the skyline is 2.5 litre six cylinder. I am having the engine pipe (that i made) ceramic coated to try and reduce the heat near the master cylinder. A friend who is organising it said that you could put your hand on the pipe with the engine running. We will see :?

740 ICs are pretty thin, so if the Skyline one is nice & chunky, you may well be ok....but having said that, Jap stuff is notorious for coming with joke-sized intercoolers as standard.

I have that crossmember from Kev Strong's racing car which uses a 240 engine mount on the turbo side. Even with a 90+/13c turbo from a later car, the clearance is almost zero, so this seems like a good idea. A conversion to 240 mounts might be a useful technique for the future, if the fancy 360 mounts are going to become unavailable.

Jet-hot / ceramic coatings really do work. Also, Garrett do a sort of 'tea cosy' for the hot side of most of their turbos, which helps even further.

Let us know how you get on - sounds most interesting!

The 700 intercoller is a bit over kill compared to most.
A lot of low pressusre turbo cars run without any intercooler so anything will be better than nothing

Though 700-series intercooler is big, it doesn't have too good cooling and flow capabilites compared to it's size. :P It doesn't have internal fins in the core and it's kinda thin.

Three 700-series cores http://silverbackracing.itgo.com/COR_0009.jpg

Also plastic ends tend to blow of at higher pressures.

Though it's much better than other IC's of it's time, but nowadays you can get those chinese made "ebay coolers" kinda cheap, which have internal fins and flow much better. I've got one too, works great. :P Quality is great compared to the price.

A much taller cooler would've fitted easily, but I would have had the ends rewelded because I wan't to run piping from the stock holes. But that's good for few hundred HP's so more than enough for me.

Yep I have seen the plasic ends split when running more boost pressure.

These cheap intercoolers are a good way to go

An Iveco truck intercooler (from a 7.5 tonner) is an almost perfect drop-in for a 2/7/900, and is huge compared with the stock one. There's also a "baby" version, which looks a good size for a 300. Chesh has one which I keep meaning to 'borrow'.

The engine is in. The engine pipe that i made has been ceramic coated so hopefully it won't cook the master cylinder. I am not running an intercooler yet (very soon.) I put a 240 flat lightened flywheel in with a clutch from an Astra 2ltr. engine. It is slightly thicker so it put the diaphragm past the pivot point and caused it to slip. today i spaced the pressure plate out a bit to stop slippage. The power increase is huge. The car is a lot of fun to drive :D . I don't know but i think that the fuel economy should be better when i drive carefully? Maybe. But who cares when your having fun.

Oh yes :-D Sounds like a lot of fun!

Supposedly a 740 turbo pressure plate with the standard disc holds a fair bit of power....but that's with the standard 'dished' style flywheel, of course.
