Hello, its automatic transmission fluid (ATF) for the gears. Surprising but true for a manual gearbox. When I drain the whole lot out, I just get a 5 litre / gallon can and most of it gets used. Can't remember about the diff apart from it needing the usual EP80 or EP90. I seem to remember that a couple 1 litre bottles did the trick. Hope this helps, bogbasic.

Pretty sure the diff uses 1.3 litres, but please check this!

Bought 2 litres just incase.
And i'll just chuck as much gearbox oil in as i can if theres too much it can spew out the breather pipe
Looking forward to having this car running again.

40W magnatec for the gears is the latest recommendation, as opposed to ATF. Sounds mad but that comes from Volvo and Castrol. There's a thread about it buried somewhere.

I've used 10w40 Magnatec in my gearbox. Done a few hundred miles now and the gearbox is quieter and shifts smoother.

I think all this confusion about 10w40 or ATF for the gearbox puts a lot of people off changing it, for fear of choosing the wrong one.
I don't know how different the two are, and I doubt the wrong one would make too much difference. Although some brand new oil of the wrong type may be better than 20 year old oil of the wrong type, but still...
Good to hear you've had no probs with that Carl.

I spent a bit of time searching on here about what to use and there's lots of opinions on the matter. But I had some Magnatec in the garage so thought I may as well give it a go

My take on it...is there that much difference between ATF and 10w40? They're both slippery
cheers
