accelerator cable

Post by simon in alghero » 11 Dec 2004 04:03 pm

Can someone help me.

A few weeks ago I had the accelerator cable replaced here in Sardinia. Only they couldn't get a Renault one so they "modified" my broken one. Well, surprise - it doesn't work.

If I can get the car to the Volvo dealer in Sssari - is this a resonably easy job? (presumably this would explain lack of acceeration, jumping, stalling etc.)????

Thanks to anyone....

Thanks for your response....

They make a big thing of everything on the island!
Do you reckon I am better off tring to dive to Sassari (25 miles) or getting the part first and then trying to get someone locall to fit it?
Seems to be causing havoc with teh choke as well - is this normal?

I dont think there would be choke problems with the accelerator cable.Take the air cleaner assembly off for a better look and get someone to press accelerator. If cable works the linkages smoothly then problem is likely elsewhere.assuming its a 1.7 (the renault connection) it may be our old friend the solex28.34/air leak/carburation nightmare.

Dont panic it may be simply a loose carb bolt or two need tightening if it is an air leak or if its crap in the carb some carb/fuel additive injector cleaner through the system may work.Any more detail on symptoms

Really grateful for your help.

yes it all seemed to start with the choke - once it was out it seemed to stay out and the revs just kept going up and up.
I had a look around teh bonnet with teh advice of some othe poeple on here. Part of the accelerator cable sstem was broken; if you artificially pushed it back the revs reduced.
I took it to my local garage here - on the wa I did notice that there was hardly any acceleration.
The managed to cut the accelerator cable before ensuring they could get a replacement - and then modified the old one.
Now it is OK whils the choke is out - although a bit ropey. Once the engine is warm it starts jumping and cutting out. Once again it feels as though there is hardly any acceleration.

If your bringing it back to the uk then I would invest in a new accelerator cable anyway. Theyre realy simple to fit and would take it out of the equation as well. If youve got a botched one on throw it away :D

well it couldn't be much more botched to be honest - can't believe they put the old one back
once it is back in the Uk someone can give it a series look over but in the meantime it is nearly 1000 miles

thanks for all your help
