S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
Re: S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
I think it's reached that point now though that people want to try more than the obvious choices. I really want to do the B230 T conversion when I finally get myself a 360 though. I've also thought about the 960 Turbo Diesel VW engine, wonder if it would fit?

From what I've experienced the VW engine sounds like a truck and pulls like a train. D5 is also good but I love the feeling the VW engine gave me, felt insane, like I was driving a truck.
Re: S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
wait no ignore that post you confused me saying vw engine in the 960, the 960 had a straight six volvo turbo diesel engine, the 760 is the one with the shitty vw diesel engine.

Re: S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
I don't think there was a 960 TD (at least not past 1992 or so)...740, 760 and 940 TDs all had the VW LT35 van engine...which is a total piece of shit
There were intercooled and non-intercooled versions (760s and 940s got the IC version).
...I mean it sounds like a lorry, which is cool...but it makes almost no power, drinks like a fish, and breaks for living.
The D5 needs super-fancy electronics (either factory, which will complain that the rest of the car is missing, or aftermarket, which needs to be massively poweful to do the multi-stage injection stuff...Megasquirt need not apply...think Autronic or Motec...and not their cheap ones, either), and as far as I can tell the only vaguely sensible option would be to get the ECU kit for the marine version - the Penta D3-163. Yes, I have looked into it...and it's not easy. Well that's not true...it is easy...but very, very expensive.
The smart money would be on either the Renault 1.9TD from a 440, or (if you want to go bigger) the 5-cylinder 2.5L VW/Audi unit from the 850, etc. That is electronically controlled, but the electronics can be removed from the rest of the car quite easily. The latter makes 140bhp and manages mid-low 40s combined in a V70, so 50mpg+ in a 300, for sure.
Back vaguely OT...my point was that I wonder if people bypass the redblock because they don't know it exists, or what it's capable of. It kicks the crap out of pretty much everything else with 4 cylinders, value-wise. A similar build to a YB Cosworth lump, for example, is about 1/3 of the price. If it's an informed choice, I have no problem at all with that, and more power to them...
cheers
James

Re: S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
True. I said the same thing on other topic. Redblock is hugely underrated engine amongst the "scene". Mainly because it lacks the sexiness among the public crowd. But with a price of a valve set for many engines you can build a whole redblock from bottom to the top with H-beam rods etc...foggyjames wrote: Back vaguely OT...my point was that I wonder if people bypass the redblock because they don't know it exists, or what it's capable of. Re: S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
A Volvo turbo engine would be cool, how much power do they typicaly make.
On the Diesel front I have been impressed by the Renault F9Q which is also in the S and V40. My mate has one that makes 168 bhp, and thats with a frankenstein turbo that doesnt spool up till 3K, think how much better it would be with the right turbo.
Anyway in an attempt to get back on track how much does that S2000 engine make and how good is the V-tec yo?

Re: S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
The F9 in the S40 is good but having driven my dad's one it really doesn't "feel" fast. I don't know if that's the car or what, it just doesn't have that surging feel that powerful engines have. Gives amazing economy and smooth ride though. Pulls all day, was doing 100 in the S40 and didn't even realise it

Re: S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
The S2000 motor makes (IIRC) 240bhp from 2 litres. Pretty amazing engineering. It's also one of relatively few Honda VTEC engine to rotate the right way. 8500 or 9000rpm (I forget which) with a 3-year warranty is not a common combination. Much respect...
8v redblock turbo engines make 135-182bhp in factory trim, depending on the model. The 2.0 16v (non-UK) makes 204bhp. The nicest versions are hybrids...usually 2.3 16vs...which usually make anywhere between 300-600bhp. It's pretty easy to get 300bhp out of an 8v, or 400bhp from a 16v...both stock, with just bolt-ons.
AFAIK the power record for a redblock is 1400bhp on race fuel (potentially Methanol), and just shy of 1000bhp on pump fuel.
So yeah...it's got the potential to be about as serious as 4-pots come.
Nothing at all wrong with an SR20 (except that it's no better than a B230, IMHO) or S2000 motors...and I'm glad to see them. I just wish there were more B230 turbos in 360s before we see the more exotic swaps. The rear end and suspension swaps pretty much seal the deal, mind you...
cheers

S2000s spin the wrong way, it's the K20 onwards which spin the right way, found in civic type-arses.

I read in PPC that the F20 spins the right way too. They weren't lying were they? (Again...)

Re: S2000 engine/box & 200sx bits in a 340
Later civics definitely spin the right way. Information on the s2000 seems to be conflicting, but every swap I've seen uses the diff from the donor car, which to me suggests wrong-spinning-ness.
